Kerak peradaban pada perantaraThe crust of civilisation in its intermediaries
Kerak peradaban Aceh tersimpan pada perantara: makam, nisan, koin, naskah, hikayat, hadih maja dan bahasa. Perantara inilah sumber primer ilmu Aceh. The crust of Acehnese civilisation is kept in intermediaries: tombs, gravestones, coins, manuscripts, hikayat, hadih maja and language. These are the primary sources of Aceh studies.
The tenth thesis starts from a methodological difficulty. Spirit and ideas, the first two rungs in the structure of Acehnese knowledge, can never be touched directly. One cannot interview Malik al-Salih, attend the councils of Iskandar Muda, or ask the kerukun of the Balai Besar what a royal edict meant. All of this reaches us only through intermediaries: tombs and gravestones, coins, manuscripts, hikayat, hadih maja and language. The thesis holds that these intermediaries are not leftovers that happened to survive but the crust of civilisation, a sediment formed as spirit was repeatedly embodied in objects, texts and speech and then hardened from generation to generation. Intermediaries are therefore the primary sources of Aceh studies, and the way they are treated decides whether that knowledge is born from within or borrowed from outside.
The idea of a crust of civilisation first appeared as a complaint. In the essay "Kenapa Aceh Bukan Melayu?" ("Why Is Aceh Not Malay?", 2009), the crust of Acehnese civilisation names something feared lost: titles, customary dress, language and historical memory that could be blurred by a neighbour's identity claims, while nothing about them was taught from school to university. The essay compared Aceh with the Dayak, who had conceived a Dayakology, and with Java, which had embedded its crust of civilisation throughout Indonesia. From that complaint the thesis derives a firmer formulation: if the crust of civilisation is not studied, it is not only forgotten but can also be appropriated, falsified or sold. Knowledge of Aceh must therefore begin with guarding and reading that crust.
The oldest layer of the crust is stone. The Minye Tujoh tombstone inscription at Matang Kuli, North Aceh, bears an eight-line verse in Old Malay mixed with Sanskrit and Arabic elements, recording the death of a believing ruler on Friday 14 Dhu al-Hijja 781 AH (1380), a descendant of Barubasa with rights over Kedah and Pasai. A single gravestone thus holds at once a transition of script and language, a theology of death and a claim to sovereignty over two lands on two sides of the strait. Such data are complemented by the earliest Islamic epigraphy of the archipelago, by Sufi elements on Acehnese gravestones and by the tradition of the batu Aceh that spread to the Peninsula. When the gravestone of Malik al-Salih gives the year 696 AH/1297 and the tomb of Muhammad Malik al-Zahir stands at Beuringen, these stones become anchors of dating that no hikayat can provide.
The second layer is metal. The title Malik al-Zahir on the dirham of Pasai and the gold dirham of Aceh Darussalam show that sovereignty was spoken through the ruler's name and the profession of faith struck in gold. The historian T. Ibrahim Alfian called the gold coinage of Pasai from the reign of Sultan Muhammad Malik al-Zahir the oldest deureuham. A coin from the reign of Sultanah Safiatuddin, according to notes compiled by M. Adli Abdullah from the studies of van Langen, Hulshoff Pol and Cowan, was of 17-carat gold, 13 millimetres across and 0.58 grams in weight, while Kreemer recorded a scale of value running from the tahil to the pardu, derham, kupang and keueh. Metal, in other words, stores a system: theology, economy and governance in one small piece.
The third layer is the manuscript, and here the thesis finds its richest example. The history of the copies of the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn shows that the sultanate's legal text was not the work of a single author but a living archive copied in the Balai Besar and the Balai Furdah from 1015 AH/1607 to 1231 AH/1815. Each copy, in 1055 AH, 1120 AH and 1165 AH, was also an occasion to record negotiated changes in the law, such as the fine on khura elephant cloth for which the merchants begged remission. The same text served as an instrument of diplomacy: the London copy came from W.E. Phillips, Governor of Penang, who received it as a gift from the sultan. Alongside legal texts, the Hikayat Malem Dagang records Iskandar Muda's expedition to the Peninsula in Acehnese, and the hikayat as a historical source requires such works to be read together with the Bustan al-Salatin and European sources. The Acehnese writing tradition and kitab kuning and kitab putih carry this layer into the world of the dayah.
The fourth layer is language, the layer closest to everyday life and therefore the easiest to overlook. The languages of Aceh, efforts to produce a diacritic spelling and dictionary of Acehnese, and hadih maja store social theory in highly compressed form. The Mābaina al-Salāṭīn itself, though written in Malay in Jawi script, inserts Acehnese words such as ceue, peutua and teukeuse, so that language bears witness that the court bureaucracy thought in two languages at once. At this point the crust of civilisation is not only a museum object but also a vocabulary still spoken in coffee shops and meunasah.
The thesis is tested most sharply when the intermediaries themselves are called into question. First, intermediaries are not transparent. The reading of the Minye Tujoh inscription still needs re-examination; the accounts of foreign visitors to Pasai, as seen in foreign records of Samudera Pasai, do not always agree with one another; and a number of sections of the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn were added after Iskandar Muda while still being ascribed to him. Intermediaries carry the interests of the copyists, carvers and rulers who commissioned them. Second, claims about origins can become a battleground, as shown by the Peureulak historiographical polemic and by the various theories of the arrival of Islam in the archipelago. Third, much of the crust of Acehnese civilisation lies outside Aceh. Copies of the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn are held in London and Leiden; the copy van Langen found among the books abandoned at the Indrapuri mosque when the Dutch took it in 1879 was lost in the great Banda Aceh flood of 1886. Control over the crust of civilisation is thus also a history of war and colonialism.
The most concrete test took place at Gampong Pande. On 10 November 2013 gold coins of the kingdom were found in the mud of the Krueng Doi, near the former site of the royal mint. Hundreds of residents waded into the river, and each piece could be sold for up to about five hundred thousand rupiah. Something similar had happened in 1979, when Rohani, a resident of Paya Meuligoe in Peureulak, found dirhams bearing the profession of faith and the name of Sultan Alaidin Syah while hoeing her yard. M. Adli Abdullah promptly urged that the area be protected from further damage. Here the thesis turns into an ethical question: are intermediaries treated as sources of knowledge or as commodities? When coins are sold piece by piece, what is lost is not only gold but also stratigraphic context, the link to the mint site and the chance to reread the economic history of the sultanate.
Much remains open. There is still no integrated corpus bringing together Acehnese gravestones, coins, manuscripts and hikayat in a single reference system that allows them to be read against each other. The periodisation of Acehnese literature and the Acehnese book world still need to be connected with the periodisation of epigraphy and numismatics. A deeper theoretical question also awaits an answer: does the crust of civilisation merely store spirit, or does it also reshape it every time it is read? The copying tradition of the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn points to the second answer, since every copy is an interpretation.
Within the structure of sixteen theses, T10 stands on floor IV as the store of evidence for the other theses. T8 (two axes: palace and ulama) needs the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn and the sultans' gravestones; T9 (a maritime and cosmopolitan civilisation) needs the port dastur and the dirham; T11 (dayah, the Haramain, and from teungku to ustaz) needs the kitab and the writing tradition; and T12 (Aceh born of war) needs the war hikayat. Below, T10 is the concrete form of T2 (decolonising knowledge and local sources), which demands that intermediaries be read as sources of theory, and of T3 (spirit as the source of knowledge), since the crust is where spirit settles. It also supplies material for T6 (fricativisation), because only preserved data can be rubbed against theory. On the five-floor ladder, T10 is the point at which spirit, ideas and philosophy become open to examination, so that action and theory on the upper floors do not stand on conjecture.
