Hikayat Prang SabiHikayat Prang Sabi (Epic of the Holy War)

Digubah 1881Composed 1881

The Hikayat Prang Sabi is an Acehnese-language epic composed by Teungku Chik Pante Kulu on his voyage home from Mecca in 1881. It became the chief source of martial inspiration in Aceh’s war against the Dutch, so much so that the war itself came to be called Prang Sabi. The text was recited in dayah, meunasah and homes before people went into battle, and was copied again and again. It is the clearest example of how the experience of hajj was translated into the energy of resistance.

According to A. Hasjmy, Muhammad Pante Kulu was shaped by two great currents he encountered in the Holy Land: the revivalist movement associated with Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Wahhab and the reformist call of Sayyid Jamal al-Din al-Afghani. Artistic by temperament, he loved the diwans of the war poets of the Prophet’s time, such as Hassan ibn Thabit and Ka‘b ibn Zuhayr, and the stories of Muslim heroes such as Khalid ibn al-Walid, ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, Hamza and Tariq ibn Ziyad. These materials were fused into a hikayat in Acehnese.

Ibrahim Alfian records that during the war the hikayat was read in dayah, meunasah, private homes and elsewhere before people went to fight. In areas already occupied by the Dutch it was recited in secret. It spread not only through oral performance but also through repeated copying of manuscripts to reach every corner of Aceh. The hikayat thus worked as a medium of mass mobilisation through oral and written tradition at once.

Its influence can also be read in the stance of war leaders. Around 1890 they actually urged people not to go on hajj in order to strengthen the ranks against the Dutch, since war against the unbelievers was deemed more pressing. The Hikayat Prang Sabi reveals a historical irony: a spirit brought home from Mecca later moved people to postpone their journey to Mecca for the sake of jihad at home.

The hikayat is seen as fuelling the image of the Dutch as infidels and the phoh kaphé spirit that led the Dutch to call Acehnese fighters ‘Aceh pungó’; one reading attributes it to Tgk. Chik Kuta Karang, an attribution that departs from the usual one and needs checking.
