Lima motif menulis dalam tradisi AcehFive motives for writing in the Acehnese tradition
This typology distinguishes five reasons why Acehnese scholars write: to fill a gap in the literature, to answer a ruler's request, to respond to current events, to engage in polemic, and to fulfil an intellectual vocation. Each motive yields a different kind of work, from commentaries on classical texts to histories of resistance. Knowing the motive makes it easier to situate a work among others. The typology also traces the tradition's shift from court and dayah to campus and newspaper.
The first motive is to fill gaps in Islamic literature. When students had no other sources, teachers copied and commented on texts so that seekers of knowledge had a guiding light; scholarship without books was likened to a river without water. In the modern period, Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy's writings on Islamic law, hadith and Qur'anic studies played a similar role, each field becoming part of the curriculum map of Indonesia's state Islamic higher education.
The second motive is a ruler's request. Sultans wanted scholars' treatises as handbooks of government, so that texts functioned almost as statutes and their authors stood close to the centre of power. Nuruddin ar-Raniri's Sirat al-Mustaqim and Abd al-Ra'uf al-Singkili's Mir'at al-Tullab, written at the request of Sultanah Safiyatuddin, are the prime examples.
The third motive is response to circumstances. H.M. Zainuddin wrote a history of Aceh because none existed in his day; Hasan di Tiro wrote in reaction to the injustice suffered by the Acehnese; the Hikayat Prang Sabi was composed to kindle the spirit of holy war against the Dutch. After Aceh joined the Republic, some authors tied Acehnese history to Indonesia's, while others sought to separate the two.
The fourth motive is polemic, which peaked in Nuruddin ar-Raniri's rebuttals of Hamzah Fansuri's teachings. Polemical writing rarely resurfaced afterwards; a modern instance is H.M. Rasjidi's critique of Nurcholish Madjid. The fifth motive is writing as a scholar's vocation, pursued consistently by Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, his son Nourouzzaman Ash-Shiddieqy, and Ali Hasjmy.
