Empat toponim Aceh: Serambi Mekkah, Tanah Rencong, Daerah Modal, Daerah IstimewaAceh’s four toponyms: Serambi Mekkah, Tanah Rencong, Daerah Modal, Daerah Istimewa

Dirumuskan sejak 1950-an; beredar luas hingga kiniFormulated from the 1950s; widely current to the present

Aceh’s four epithets, Serambi Mekkah (Mecca’s Verandah), Tanah Rencong (Land of the Dagger), Daerah Modal (Region of Capital) and Daerah Istimewa (Special Area), work as shorthand for four strands of historical narrative standardised by Acehnese elites and national Muslim intellectuals from the 1950s. Each epithet condenses a cluster of episodes: the coming of Islam, anti-colonial resistance, sacrifice for the Revolution and the autonomy settlement of 1959. Daniel Birchok shows that together they placed Aceh inside the Indonesian nation while insisting on its distinctiveness.

The four toponyms did not appear all at once. Serambi Mekkah was already in circulation under colonial rule and is even attested in the writings of Nuruddin ar-Raniry, whereas the other three grew out of twentieth-century experience. Only in the 1950s, however, amid the wounds of the Cumbok War, the dispute over provincial status and the Darul Islam rebellion, did writers such as Ali Hasjmy, Mohammad Said and HAMKA rework older episodes into four mutually reinforcing narrative strands. These strands were then marshalled as arguments that Aceh deserved special status with autonomy in religion, custom and education.

The power of the toponyms lies in their economy. In everyday speech a single epithet is enough to summon its whole historical load. Birchok notes how thoroughly they saturate public life: colleges and dayah named after the ‘verandah’, the daily Serambi Indonesia, daggers in glass cases at souvenir shops, pop songs, sermons, and economic claims on Jakarta voiced in the language of the ‘region of capital’. Officials routinely opened conversations by calling Aceh a special area even after its official name had changed.

Analytically, the four toponyms create what Birchok calls a ‘value-laden geography’: the archipelago is mapped according to degrees of Islamisation and national service, with Aceh at the top. Aceh appears as the font from which Islam spread, the bulwark against the Portuguese and the Dutch, the financier of the Revolution, and the province whose specialness the state recognised. In this way Islam becomes a bond between Aceh and Indonesia rather than simply a source of resistance to it.

The toponyms are also put to different uses by different actors. Preachers use them for moral persuasion, anti-Christianisation activists used them to oppose church building, while non-Muslim residents invoke them to claim a share in Aceh’s cosmopolitan past. This flexibility explains why the four epithets have endured across generations.
