Delapan isu sentral dalam tulisan tentang AcehEight core themes in writing about Aceh

Writing about Aceh, by Acehnese and outside authors alike, revolves around eight themes: kingdoms, knowledge, ulama, war, diplomacy, betrayal, resistance movements and culture. This map reveals both a consistent pattern and its limits. Most topics carry a romantic historical tone that affirms Aceh's past glory. The question of Aceh's future barely features.

Isu peperangan paling dominan.

The theme of kingdoms is the starting point of almost every account, in three acts: rise, fall and the search for a lost kingdom. The epicentres of the rise are always Peureulak, Samudera Pasai and Aceh Darussalam, peaking in the seventeenth century with particular attention to Sultan Iskandar Muda, whose reach extended across Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. The theme of knowledge highlights the arrival of scholars and the rise of the dayah, presenting Aceh as the land of archipelagic ‘firsts’. The ulama theme is bound up with both, although since Snouck Hurgronje some writing has tended to detach the ulama from the wider Acehnese community.

War is the most dominant theme. The colonial war is often written as the defence of the Acehnese people rather than as part of Indonesia's national struggle, and the wars after incorporation into the Republic are written as resistance. Diplomacy portrays Aceh's ties with the Peninsula, the Ottomans, Britain and America and its command of the Strait of Malacca, ending with the Dutch declaration of war on 26 March 1873; in the separatist context, diplomacy is linked to the Acehnese diaspora in Europe.

Betrayal, by enemies, friends or the central government, shapes a narrative of oppression, and the label ‘traitor’ is now even used among former fighters. The theme of resistance movements features PUSA, DI/TII and GAM; notably, this history is more often written by outsiders or Acehnese living elsewhere. Culture serves as a ‘last weapon’ of identity and has produced the view of Aceh as a social laboratory.

Taken together, the eight themes reveal a historiography that acts as an opposition to Java-dominated national history. Yet this romanticism, the critique holds, generates no new spirit; it merely insists that Aceh was once great.
