Polemik historiografi lokal: Peureulak dan Syi‘ahThe local-historiography polemic: Peureulak and Shi‘ism

The polemic pits scholars who doubt the existence of a Shi‘i Peureulak sultanate in the ninth century against those who defend it on the basis of local manuscripts. At its core is the value of local historiography: is it myth to be tested against other sources, or a legitimate source too often dismissed?

Azyumardi Azra argued that there is no reliable evidence that a Muslim polity existed in the region by the mid-ninth century, still less one ruled by Shi‘is, as claimed by local writers such as A. Hasjmy. His reason was that local historiography is often accepted at face value without being tested against other sources; he drew on De Graaf and A.H. Johns, who judged archipelagic historiography to contain more myth and legend than history.

A 1999 study of Aceh’s contribution to Islamic law answered with two arguments. First, the stance was judged inconsistent with Azra’s own advice that researchers be wary of the bias of colonial sources and travellers’ accounts, often written from brief visits to port towns. Second, the Tazkirah Thabaqāt names the rulers of Peureulak in orderly sequence with the day and year of their enthronement, so that doubts about the kingdom’s existence should be reduced.

The same study noted that Azra rejected Shi‘i influence without defining definitively what he meant by Shi‘ism, focusing instead on its influence in politics, literature and religious practice. On the other side, defenders of the local tradition conceded that the influence of Shi‘i fiqh still required further research.

The polemic is valuable teaching material in Aceh studies. It shows that source criticism must apply equally, that local manuscripts should be neither accepted nor rejected out of hand, and that debates about Aceh’s past are also debates about who has the right to determine historical truth.
