Tanah Rencong: narasi perlawanan antikolonialTanah Rencong: the narrative of anti-colonial resistance
Abad ke-16 hingga Revolusi; dibakukan 1950-anSixteenth century to the Revolution; standardised in the 1950s
The epithet Tanah Rencong, ‘land of the Acehnese dagger’, sums up the narrative of Aceh as a land of unceasing resistance to colonisers, from the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century assaults on Portuguese Malacca to the war against the Dutch. Post-colonial historians framed this resistance as a pious struggle culminating in Indonesian independence. The epithet is also used to characterise the Acehnese as ready to sacrifice themselves for their faith.
Untai Tanah Rencong menjajarkan dua babak perlawanan.
The Tanah Rencong strand juxtaposes two phases of resistance. The first is the sultanate’s conflict with the Portuguese in Malacca. Although Aceh never took Malacca, it kept the Portuguese away from its core sphere, and these battles became a subject of court literature. The second is the long war against the Dutch from 1873, accompanied by the Hikayat Prang Sabi and by ulama leadership as some uleebalang went over to the colonial side.
Birchok notes that the sultanate’s resistance to the Portuguese was very probably aimed above all at controlling inter-oceanic trade. Yet writers of the 1950s, some of them veterans of the Revolution, read it as principled opposition to the earliest European colonialism. That reading rests on the fact that Aceh allied with the Ottomans and rejected Portuguese interference in a religious idiom, tying it to the Islamic cosmopolis of the Indian Ocean. Envoys of the sultanate still tried to mobilise these Ottoman networks in the early years of the Dutch war.
By bridging the two phases, the Tanah Rencong narrative produces a straight line of pious resistance from the sixteenth century to 1945. That line has served many purposes. During the 1979 ‘wild churches’ controversy, a writer in Panji Masyarakat used a psychologised version: the Acehnese might shrug off personal insult but would court martyrdom if their religion were affronted. The toponym also appears on souvenir daggers, in headlines and in political speeches.
The narrative appealed to non-Acehnese intellectuals because it resonated with anti-colonial nationalism. But the uniform line of resistance also masks historical complexity, such as uleebalang who changed sides or the economic motives behind the wars.
