Survei epigrafi kolonial di Aceh (1908–1917)The colonial epigraphic survey of Aceh (1908–1917)
1908–1917
Between 1908 and 1917 the colonial government carried out a survey of Islamic gravestones in Aceh, involving L. Melville, J.J. de Vink, J.P. Moquette and Hoesein Djajadiningrat. It produced some 1,100 estampages and more than 600 photographs, and found the tombs of Aceh’s first five sultans, a key to reconstructing the sultanate’s early chronology.
In the early twentieth century, scholarly study of Acehnese culture and history intensified with support from the Bataviaasch Genootschap and the Archaeological Commission of the Netherlands Indies. Its focus was the artefacts of Pasai and Aceh, especially Islamic gravestones, regarded as key sources for tracing the early phase of Islamisation in the Malay world. Since P.J. Veth’s work of 1873, the early chronology of the Aceh sultanate had remained uncertain.
On Snouck Hurgronje’s advice, L. Melville became the first researcher to work at Lhokseumawe in early 1908, but contracted malaria and returned to Batavia in August of that year. His successor, J.J. de Vink, was trained in Batavia by Melville and Moquette, left for Aceh in April 1912, and while there was accompanied by local ulama and Habib Tjoet until 1917. In 1913 the survey’s scope was narrowed to historically significant gravestones but extended to the whole of Aceh.
From April 1914 Hoesein Djajadiningrat joined and helped identify monuments worth studying. With Moquette he studied tombs at Kandang Meuh, Gunongan and Pasai, including the gravestone of Sultan Malik al-Salih, and published transliterations and translations. On 15 June 1914 the newspaper De Nieuwe Courant reported the discovery of the tombs of Aceh’s first five sultans with Arabic inscriptions largely intact.
The survey left a double legacy. Its archive of estampages and photographs is important material for Acehnese epigraphy, and Moquette used the Pasai gravestones to argue for the Gujarati origin of some stones and for a route of Islamisation. Yet the survey was carried out in a post-war setting under colonial interests, and the role of local helpers was rarely recorded.
