Empat ranah Antropologi Aceh: kebudayaan, arkeologi, biologi, linguistikFour branches of Acehnese anthropology: cultural, archaeological, biological, linguistic
This idea applies the classic four-field division of anthropology to Aceh, yielding Acehnese cultural anthropology, Acehnese archaeology, Acehnese biological anthropology and Acehnese linguistic anthropology. Two test questions follow: does the object of study actually exist in Aceh, and is it distinctive? The anthropology of religion, or of Islam, is added as a promising cross-disciplinary route. Archaeology and linguistics are flagged as the most urgent, since artefacts remain uninterpreted and the number of speakers of local languages keeps falling.
The framework starts from the fact that anthropology itself is plural: there are British, German, French and American traditions, and four customary sub-fields — cultural anthropology on the origins and development of culture, archaeology on the material remains of earlier societies, biological anthropology on the biological dimensions of humans, and linguistic anthropology on languages and their rules. Attaching ‘Aceh’ to each produces the abbreviations AKA, AA, ABA and ALA. This is more than labelling: each branch must show that Acehnese society offers objects of study distinct from those of other peoples in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
In the domain of religion, Jack David Eller's themes — religious entities, symbols, language, morality and change — open an agenda for reading the development of Islam in Aceh past, present and future. The comparison is pointed: Clifford Geertz built his theories on the religious life of the Javanese, John R. Bowen wrote his anthropology of Islam after studying ritual in the Gayo highlands, and the very study of customary law (adat law) in Indonesia was triggered by Snouck Hurgronje's work on Aceh. Aceh, in other words, has long contributed to anthropology without being credited as a source.
Acehnese linguistic anthropology is tasked with observing everyday language practice through direct engagement with native speakers, while Acehnese archaeology reads artefacts and topography to reconstruct past environments, social orders and ideologies. Both are seen as requiring the work of a generation or more before Aceh's cultural system can be reassembled as a whole.
