Antropologi AcehAcehnese Anthropology
Acehnese Anthropology is the sub-discipline that studies Acehnese culture from Acehnese perspectives rather than as ‘other people's culture’ researched in the service of rulers. It emerged in the shadow of Snouck Hurgronje and seeks to explain why the core of Acehnese culture survived pressures from the Dutch, Indonesia, the Malay world and global culture. Its approach is insider-to-insider and cosmopolitan. The module is placed after history, cosmology, philosophy and sociology.
Early anthropologists found it hard to separate research from national interest, so data about ‘other’ cultures were often reduced to fit policy designs. In Aceh this legacy took the form of the dominance of Snouck Hurgronje's work. Acehnese Anthropology seeks to explain how Acehnese culture survived four pressures: colonial divide-and-rule, the ‘straightening’ of culture in the name of national interest, Malay efforts to absorb Acehnese identity, and cultural imperialism through information and communication technology.
Following Adam Kuper and Joel S. Kahn, anthropology is understood as a cosmopolitan practice: the world it studies is not a set of discrete cultures but a web of intercultural relations. Acehnese Anthropology therefore does not continue the classical tradition of producing knowledge about other cultures; it rebuilds understanding of Acehnese culture and of the Acehnese drive to carry their culture elsewhere. The bias of Acehnese studying their own culture is acknowledged, so the main task is not to define culture but to account for each change within it. Acehnese migration and a diaspora spread across many countries remain largely unstudied.
To read change, the module proposes four historical spaces: traditional, modern, postmodern and planetary civilisation. In the traditional phase, three ‘compasses’ guided society. Religion took the form of Islam of the Shafi‘i school, Ash‘ari creed and Ghazalian orientation, with historical traces of Shi‘ism, the school of Ibn ‘Arabi and Persian influence. Culture, crystallised in the Adat Meukuta Alam, reusam and local cosmology, served as a guide to life and as a way of moving beyond Hindu-Buddhist dominance. Myth, transmitted by storytellers, bound identity together and can be studied as Lévi-Strauss did. Planned sub-topics include theory, Acehnese culture, the relation of religion and culture, adat and contemporary culture.
Snouck Hurgronje is seen as extending Emile Durkheim's theory, while John R. Bowen combined anthropology and history in his research in Takengon. Aceh's cultural, social and historical diversity is in fact valuable material for theory, yet it has long not been regarded as an asset.
Ethnographic method and the anthropology of religion as a symbolic system are the main methodological tools for building this sub-discipline.
The discipline is now elaborated through four branches (cultural, archaeological, biological, linguistic) plus the anthropology of religion, a map of fourteen cultural zones, a religion–culture–myth framework across four historical spaces, and case studies of contemporary phenomena such as stall society, flower boards, jerrycan society and the theology of cattle.
