Empat pintu masuk studi AcehFour entry points into Aceh studies
The question ‘where should Aceh studies begin’ is answered with four approaches: orientalist, development, conflict and post-conflict. Each is a once-dominant tradition of scholarship with its own questions, sources and biases; to begin Aceh studies is to pass through all four consciously.
The four doors are arranged almost chronologically. The orientalist approach developed in the colonial era and relied on philology, epigraphy and ethnography for the needs of government. The development approach came to the fore when the Indonesian state organised Aceh as a development region and the social sciences were used to understand change. The conflict approach grew alongside armed resistance, while the post-conflict approach was born after the tsunami and the peace agreement.
The doors are not only a sequence in time but also ways of seeing. The orientalist asks ‘who are the Acehnese and how can they be governed’; the development approach asks ‘how can Aceh be changed’; the conflict approach asks ‘why does Aceh resist’; the post-conflict approach asks ‘how is Aceh to be restored and managed’. Each question reveals part of reality and hides another part.
The first methodological step in Aceh studies is therefore to recognise through which door a source or a work entered. Colonial dictionaries, development reports, human-rights reports and evaluations of reconstruction programmes are all useful, but each must be read with awareness of its compiler’s aims.
Aceh studies does not choose one door but stands at the threshold: it uses data from all four while adding a question rarely asked, namely how the Acehnese themselves understand the world, knowledge and themselves.
