Filsafat AcehAcehnese Philosophy
Acehnese Philosophy is the sub-discipline intended to give structure to Aceh's tradition of philosophical thought, including its metaphysical foundations, moral standards and standards of conduct. Of all the branches in the curriculum, it is the least developed: no study yet calls itself Acehnese philosophy. Philosophy in Indonesia usually draws on Javanese and Hindu-Balinese traditions. The proposed point of departure is the concept of peuturi droe (knowing oneself) and the thought on the self in Hamzah Fansuri's works.
The absence of dedicated studies does not mean Aceh lacks a tradition of philosophical thought. The difficulty is that the metaphysical foundations of Acehnese knowledge have never been presented as a whole, in the way Western philosophers such as Descartes and Kant laid foundations for their own traditions. Yet, the argument holds, Acehnese scholars had laid such foundations before Europeans arrived. Western scholars succeeded in mapping Aceh's social and political life but seldom penetrated its metaphysics, and stories from that era were often recast as myth or fairy tale, so that hikayat came to be treated as bedtime stories rather than as products of knowledge.
The key concept proposed is peuturi droe, knowing oneself, set alongside the Western notion of self-awareness. The scientific study of the self in the West is often traced to the 1890s, whereas in Aceh reflection on the self is already present in Hamzah Fansuri's Sufi writings of the sixteenth century. This comparative claim is argumentative and needs testing. A more fundamental question is raised in the sociology chapter: can figures such as Hamzah Fansuri, Nuruddin ar-Raniri or Abd al-Ra'uf al-Singkili be called philosophers, or were they implementers of great ideas from elsewhere within an Acehnese setting?
In the curriculum's short outline, Acehnese Philosophy covers four topics: cosmology, metaphysics, moral standards and standards of conduct. The branch thus bridges cosmological and social inquiry, moving from views of the cosmos and the self to the norms that govern action.
Edgar Sheffield Brightman divided philosophical traditions into East and West, a division that rarely includes Southeast Asia. Yet, according to this argument, a land that has produced many great thinkers must have strong metaphysical foundations.
As a working definition, Acehnese philosophy is defined through five elements: thought, consciousness, standards of thinking and conduct, belief, and tradition. Its founding faces four obstacles, and the field is divided into four branches: philosophy of the human being, of nature, of the divine and of knowledge. Aceh studies is also proposed as core rather than merely local content in the curriculum.
