Frikatifisasi: pengetahuan lokal menjadi teoriFricativisation: local knowledge becomes theory
Pengetahuan lokal menjadi teori melalui frikatifisasi: digesekkan dengan teori ilmu sosial secara bertahap sampai lahir teori pribumi.Local knowledge becomes theory through fricativisation: rubbed step by step against social theory until an indigenous theory emerges.
Istilah frikatifisasi mengambil gambaran gesekan.
The sixth thesis holds that local knowledge becomes theory through fricativisation, that is, by being rubbed step by step against social theory until an indigenous theory emerges. The thesis answers a problem left by the preceding ones. If Aceh is a subject of knowledge (T1), if local sources must be read as sources of theory (T2), and if the Acehnese have a system of thought that can be formulated (T5), then there must be an accountable way of turning vocabulary, expressions and practices into concepts that can be debated beyond Aceh. Local knowledge does not automatically become science; without method, it remains either admired wisdom or data processed by others.
The term fricativisation takes the image of friction. Just as a fricative sound is produced by air forced through a narrow gap, new knowledge arises when two kinds of knowledge meet under tension. The framework is formulated in the entries on the fricativisation paradigm of knowledge, the six steps of fricativisation, the cycle of knowledge and levels of thinking and fricative levels, which stress that friction proceeds in stages and repeatedly, not all at once. The idea stands within a wider conversation on the relation between science and tradition, including the meta-theory of social science and the four dimensions of meta-theory, which ask where theory comes from and how it is justified.
The distinctiveness of fricativisation becomes clear when it is compared with two paradigms familiar in Indonesian Islamic universities. The Islamisation of knowledge tends to filter modern science through an Islamic framework, so its main movement is correction. The integration-interconnection paradigm seeks to bring religious and general sciences together in one building where they address each other, so its main movement is connection. Fricativisation stresses a different movement: friction that changes both sides. The local concept is tested by theory, but theory is also tested by the local concept, and the result is not a blend of the two but a new formulation that no longer merely borrows outside theory and is not imprisoned in local uniqueness. The entries on the three paradigms of knowledge in Islamic studies and the four challenges of knowledge show the map of debate in which fricativisation takes its position.
The most mature case for testing the thesis is the panglima laot. At the first stage, the institution appears as local knowledge: the customary leader of fishermen at the level of the lhok, settler of disputes among pawang and organiser of the khanduri laot, with a customary law of the sea often called one of the oldest in Aceh. At the second stage, that picture is rubbed against historical sources and theory: van Vollenhoven's notes on the variety of coastal offices, the four syahbandar recorded by Lombard, Lee Kam Hing's account of a panglima laot appointed by Sultan Mahmud Syah to oversee the coast, and the council of four orang kaya described by Amirul Hadi. The result, as formulated in the entry on the panglima laot in the sultanate's port system, is a reversal: the panglima laot was originally part of the port apparatus, and its shrinking into a "guardian of custom" was the consequence of the sultanate's collapse and of colonial framing. The friction also changed the theory: the sharp distinction between state and custom inherited from reception theory turns out not to fit Aceh.
The next friction takes place with theories of common-pool resource management. Research on the rise of the panglima laot at the provincial level records that from the assembly of 6 to 7 June 2000 the institution was organised into three tiers, from lhok and district to province, registered with the World Forum of Fisher Peoples in 2008, and after the tsunami worked with FAO in a programme of coastal fisheries co-management. Researchers compared it with sasi in Maluku, often cited as a model of integrating traditional institutions into modern co-management. At this point the question posed at the outset can be partly answered: the panglima laot can be raised from customary practice into a concept of maritime governance that combines customary authority, state functions and global networks, and that concept can be compared with the experience of other coastal societies. That is what is meant by indigenous theory: rooted in Aceh, yet speaking to the world.
Other cases show the same pattern at different stages. The triad hana roh, hana get, han jeut was rubbed against Charles Taylor's work on the sources of the modern self, to affirm that morality is determined not only by rationality but also by the sources of meaning a society believes in. The trilogy of ngeutlogi, teungeutlogi and peungeutlogi can be rubbed against the concepts of false consciousness or hegemony, with the advantage that its terms live in everyday speech. Haba carong and haba bangai can be read as a theory of discourse linking the quality of speech to the speaker's position towards knowledge and power. The ideas of fiqh as an Islamic social science, managing religion in Parsonian and Durkheimian frames and an Acehnese political science point to other areas where similar friction can be carried out.
The thesis faces several objections. The first concerns criteria: when can a local concept be declared to have become theory? Without clear measures, fricativisation risks becoming a label for any attempt to wrap local data in theoretical terms. Three measures can be proposed from the case of the panglima laot: the concept must correct a previously accepted understanding, it must change the theory it was rubbed against, and it must be usable to read cases beyond its origin. The second objection concerns testability: many local formulations, such as the trilogy of Acehnese thought, are still reflective essays not yet tested empirically. Friction with theory is not enough; it must be accompanied by friction with data.
The third objection concerns power within the friction itself. In an encounter between a local concept and an established theory, the theory is usually stronger, because it is backed by institutions, journals and international languages. Fricativisation can slide into domestication, when the local concept is accepted only insofar as it can be translated into existing categories. The entry on Indonesian anthropology and Java-centrism reminds us that such imbalance also holds within Indonesia itself. Fricativisation therefore demands procedural equality: the local concept must be given the right to reject theory, not merely be tested by it. The entry on translating one's own culture touches the same problem from the side of language.
What remains open is the documentation of other cases that have passed through the whole cycle, since so far the panglima laot is the most complete example. The vulnerabilities of that institution itself, such as dependence on international programmes, overlapping authority with state agencies and political temptation, also remind us that indigenous theory does not guarantee the survival of the institution that is its source. Another question concerns education: how fricativisation is taught as a research method in universities, and how students are trained to rub the vocabulary of their villages against the theories they read. Here the idea of the bullets of civilisation signals that the method is meant not only for academic purposes but for building civilisation.
In the architecture of Acehnologi, T6 is the axis of the third floor, where material from the first and second floors is worked into theory. It requires T1 (Aceh as a subject of knowledge) and T2 (Decolonising knowledge and local sources) as preconditions, uses T3 (Spirit as the source of knowledge), T4 ('Irfani epistemology and the triangle of scholars) and T5 (The Acehnese way of thinking as a system) as material, and works alongside T7 (Eight disciplines, one body), since friction always crosses disciplinary boundaries. Its results are tested on the fourth and fifth floors: T8 (Two axes: palace and ulama) and T9 (A maritime and cosmopolitan civilisation) supply the case of the panglima laot, while T13 to T16 supply contemporary problems that demand new theory. From spirit to ideas, from ideas to philosophy, and from philosophy to action and theory, T6 is the rung where ideas turn into theory.
