‘Masyarakat baru’ dan lima kekuatan yang melahirkan sosiologiThe ‘new society’ and the five forces that gave birth to sociology
Eropa, akhir abad ke-18 hingga abad ke-19Europe, late eighteenth to nineteenth centuries
Sociology is understood as a response to the rise of a ‘new society’ in Europe: an urban society no longer willing to be governed by monarchy and church. Five forces produced it: the French Revolution of 1789, the industrial revolution and capitalism, socialism, urbanisation, and the shifting role of religion. Sociology was therefore at first a science of urban society, while villages and the interior were left to anthropology. Social theories are likened to the dough for a ‘cake’ called modernisation.
The five forces are interlinked. The French Revolution moved theorists such as Comte and Durkheim to reorganise society through social theory. The industrial revolution and capitalism demanded an explanation of the shift from peasant society to an industrial society driven by machines and money, with Marx, Weber, Durkheim and Simmel as the main references. Socialism emerged as a critique of capitalism. Urbanisation sent people ‘storming’ into the cities and called for a new order. All these processes affected religiosity, which is why almost every early theorist paid close attention to religion.
The ‘new society’ is portrayed as a world in which people are busy making money, the market is the arena of exchange, power-holders enjoy class and status, and bureaucracy is created to manage affairs. Democracy was invented to replace the authority of the palace, and the word secular came to displace religion. In this critical reading, sociological theory serves to regulate and manage urban society for the satisfaction of elites, transferring supreme authority from the church to holders of economic and political power.
Morrison identifies three domains of social theory: explaining the problems of past and present societies and their historical development, formulating ways of viewing society and history, and accounting for values and standards in social life. For Aceh, this genealogy raises questions: were there comparable events in Aceh that could give rise to its own sociology, and did an Acehnese ‘new society’ emerge by uniting, rather than separating, religion and public life?
