Teori sosial klasik: Marx, Durkheim, WeberClassical social theory: Marx, Durkheim, Weber

Abad ke-19 hingga awal abad ke-20; dipakai dalam studi Islam Aceh kontemporer19th to early 20th century; applied in contemporary Islamic studies in Aceh

Karl Marx, Émile Durkheim and Max Weber are treated as the three pillars of modern social theory, each with a different unit of analysis: modes of production and class, social structure and function, and individual social action. Together with Malinowski and Lévi-Strauss, they supply the basic vocabulary of sociology and anthropology. For the study of Muslim society in Aceh, familiarity with this theoretical tradition is presented as a precondition for moving beyond purely normative description. Because each theory grew out of long observation of a particular society, it has to be tested anew in the field.

In this reading, Marx grounds social analysis in the history and politics of human existence. Social relations are shaped by exchange, by the human capacity to produce a surplus, and by the power of money-owners to purchase the labour of others; from this flow analyses of capitalism, class, state intervention and social movements. Religious thinkers have often rejected him because religion is not treated as a driver of social change.

Durkheim insisted that social interaction be understood systemically, without lifting individuals out of their context; that social behaviour is learned through the habits of tradition; and that societies can be classified by the complexity of their structure. His service to the study of religion was to tie religion to social life, enabling anthropologists to examine the social origins and functions of religious practices. This structure-centred approach, including the habit of interviewing high-status figures, is the one most often used by researchers in Islamic studies.

Weber focused on individual social action and its meaning, and on the idea that religious understanding can be an active principle of social change, as in his thesis on the Protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism. Lévi-Strauss's structuralism later located structure in human thought, unlike Radcliffe-Brown, who saw it in networks and groups, and rejected Marxist material determinism.

Three methodological lessons follow for Aceh: human beings, as individuals and as members of communities, are the object of social science; social science asks what people possess, how they distribute it and how their beliefs operate; and theory emerges only from repeated research or long immersion in a single community.
