Pendekatan konflik dalam studi AcehThe conflict approach in Aceh studies
The conflict approach reads Aceh through its resistance: the war against the Dutch, the Darul Islam rebellion and the armed movement from 1976. It produced important studies of nationalism, violence and identity, but also made Aceh known chiefly as a ‘conflict region’.
Namun dominasi kajian perang membawa akibat.
The roots of the approach lie in the historiography of colonial war, for example studies of the 1873–1912 Aceh War as a ‘war in the way of God’. After independence, the Darul Islam rebellion under Teungku Muhammad Daud Beureueh and later the Free Aceh Movement supplied new material. During the period of military operations, human-rights studies, NGO reports and political analysis dominated writing on Aceh.
Its main question is why Aceh resists. The answers vary: the memory of a sovereign sultanate, disappointment with the centre, economic injustice, identity sentiment, and the role of ulama in framing resistance as a religious duty. The approach enriched theories of separatism, ethnic nationalism and centre-region relations.
Yet the dominance of war studies had consequences. The basic concepts of everyday life, philosophy and cosmology in Aceh were rarely discussed, and cultural assets were often turned into ideologically charged historical memory. Heroic narratives also sometimes concealed internal violence, such as the wounds of the social revolution.
For Aceh studies, the conflict door is important for understanding trauma and the politics of memory, but it must not be the only lens. Aceh is larger than the history of its resistance.
