Masyarakat warung: warung kopi, kuliner, dan perpindahan ruang publikStall society: coffee shops, cuisine and the shifting public sphere
‘Stall society’ names the phenomenon in which coffee shops and eateries take over the functions of the family room as places to receive guests, lobby, celebrate and debate. Visits to coffee shops follow a regular daily rhythm, from after the dawn prayer until late at night. At the same time, Acehnese and outside cuisines meet in what is called a ‘cultural kinship’ (silaturahmi kebudayaan). There is as yet no adequate empirical explanation of the phenomenon.
The rhythm of Banda Aceh's coffee shops is easy to read: they open after the dawn prayer and fill with worshippers stopping by before going home; around 8.30 civil servants come for coffee as breakfast; from 10.30 to midday it is the turn of contractors, politicians, journalists and activists. After a lull of an hour or two, they fill again from afternoon to midnight, pausing for the sunset prayer, then turn into places for dinner and watching football or films. Some stay open 24 hours, offer meeting rooms for a fee and remake themselves as cafés with foreign-language names and menus; even a famous name spawns a ‘premium’ version.
The functions of the coffee shop have widened: a place for social visits, receiving guests, project lobbying, information-gathering by intelligence agents, journalists and researchers, public discussion, shaping political discourse, and even finishing office work thanks to Wi-Fi. For students it is a space of both online and offline socialising. Similar patterns appear in Meulaboh, Lhokseumawe, Bireuen and Langsa. The coffee shop was once the preserve of older men; now it is a public space for all ages.
The culinary world shows the same openness. Economic migration has brought regional foods to Banda Aceh, such as mi caluk from Grong-Grong and Bate Iliek rujak, while workers from Java who came for post-tsunami projects opened nasi uduk stalls. Local specialities such as Ulee Kareng coffee, mi Aceh, sate Matang, bu sie itek and Gayo coffee sit alongside nasi Padang, roti canai, global franchises and ramen. Where one eats also signals class: goat-curry eateries lined with luxury cars have become a middle-class stage.
The traditional coffee shop is now giving way to the modern café, which has reached even subdistrict towns. Its clientele has changed too, from adult men to young men and women, teenagers and women, and some young ulama have begun preaching in cafés. Amid these changes the coffee shop still serves as a space for public discussion where differences of opinion can be softened.
