Arabisasi, Islam sebagai produk kebudayaan, dan membaca budaya AcehArabisation, Islam as cultural product, and reading Acehnese culture
This approach distinguishes Islam as a normative-deductive theological product from Islam as a cultural product, the fruit of human reasoning in the Middle East that reached Aceh. Drawing on theories of religion and culture from Joachim Wach to Clifford Geertz, Acehnese culture is read as a system of ideas, of structures and of symbols. The proposal is to read it from an ‘irfani (intuitive) perspective, how the Acehnese see themselves. The main critique is that culture as a system of thought has ‘lost out’ to symbolic culture.
Kesimpulannya bersifat programatik.
The framework begins by distinguishing religious from cultural experience. Joachim Wach defined religious experience as a response to Ultimate Reality that engages the whole person, is intense, and issues in action. Culture, on the other hand, is approached through several schools: as a cognitive or knowledge system, as a structural system after Lévi-Strauss, and as a symbolic system after Geertz and David Schneider, alongside Durkheim’s collective representations, which tie culture to authority. Koentjaraningrat defined culture as the totality of human ideas, actions and works acquired through learning.
Two key questions follow for Aceh: how Acehnese culture is produced, and who holds authority over its production. The Islam that reached Aceh is treated as a cultural product, while its theological core, above all the twofold confession of faith, remains normative. Being Muslim is understood as a matter of sirr, an intimate closeness to God known only to Him. The study of peak experience in the Acehnese tradition is judged to have stopped with Hamzah Fansuri.
The conclusion is programmatic. Acehnese culture should be read from the ‘irfani through to the burhani (empirical), tracing the last point of Middle Eastern and South Asian influence. Sufism is pictured as Islam’s highest wall of influence, while at the lowest layer Acehnese still hold mystical beliefs. The tension between religion and culture, claimed to be united ‘like essence and attribute’, needs study, because cultural erosion begins with a mode of thought that foregrounds only symbols.
