Bagian terbesar risalah membahas jalannya ekspedisi.

De Generaal J. H. B. Köhler: eene nalezing van feiten tijdens de eerste expeditie tegen het Rijk van Atjeh, roughly “General J. H. B. Köhler: a re-examination of facts during the first expedition against the Kingdom of Aceh”, is a Dutch-language pamphlet published in Rotterdam by Nijgh & Van Ditmar in 1884. Its author gives no name, presenting himself only as “een oud-hoofdofficier”, a former field officer, who says he served for several months directly under General Köhler’s command. The foreword is signed with the initial S. and dated Java, July 1884, while the appendix is dated March 1884. The scanned copy read today comes from the KITLV library in Leiden. The text runs to some sixty-four pages and has two parts: a main study of the first Dutch military expedition to Aceh in April 1873, and an appendix titled “Atjeh-zaken” (Aceh matters), previously printed in the supplements of the Semarang daily De Locomotief on 12, 19 and 22 March 1884.

The pamphlet was born as a rebuttal. Its target was the work of E. B. Kielstra, a major of engineers in the Netherlands Indies army, titled Beschrijving van den Atjeh-oorlog (Description of the Aceh War), which included an account of the first expedition and a short biography of General Köhler, the expedition commander killed in front of the Great Mosque of Banda Aceh on 14 April 1873. The immediate trigger was a discussion at a meeting of the Indisch Genootschap in The Hague on 7 November 1883, when Kielstra argued that the general had acted in haste, while a participant named Bosscher held instead that the expedition had wasted too much time and acted with too little speed. The author wanted to defend Köhler’s reputation and to show that the expedition’s failure owed more to weak support from the staff, engineers and artillery around the general.

The author’s sources are varied. He says he had no direct access to official archives, but he quotes at length from the official documents published by the government on the origins of the Aceh War, the secret inquiry (enquête) into the expedition’s failure, General Whitton’s report on that inquiry, military journals such as De Militaire Spectator and Indisch Militair Tijdschrift, the journals De Indische Gids and De Tijdspiegel, and books such as Onze oorlog met Atsjin and Heldenfeiten in Oost-Indië. The pamphlet thus becomes a small map of the Dutch literature on the 1873 expedition that circulated in the decade after the event, and it shows that the failure of the first expedition was a subject of fierce debate among officers.

For Aceh studies, the pamphlet’s value lies in the data tucked inside its defence. The author opens with the political situation in Aceh before the war. In his view the sultan’s authority, said to be unlimited, was far from that in reality, for the heads of the sagi tried to be as independent of the sultan as possible, often even fought each other, with the sultan sometimes taking sides. In the Sagi of the XXII Mukim and the XXVI Mukim in particular, the sultan’s government was often obstructed. This picture fits the understanding of Aceh Besar’s political structure as resting on the three sagi, the uleebalang and the mukim, though it must be read knowing that colonial writers tended to stress division in order to justify divide-and-rule strategies.

The pamphlet also tells of Teuku Nek, Raja Muda Setia, head of the district of Meuraxa near the royal compound. On 23 March 1873, the day after the ship Citadel van Antwerpen arrived off Aceh, his envoy came aboard bearing his master’s seal ring and said that Teuku Nek and his people did not want war. A Malay named Sidi Tahil, who had carried the Dutch royal message to the sultan, reported the same. Teuku Nek is described as an influential chief, son-in-law of the Raja of Troenon and a relative of the head of the XXVI Mukim, who was then inside the royal compound with his forces to help defend it. The author also records that Teuku Nek was forced by the other sagi chiefs to hand over the beach fortifications to them, and that after the Dutch troops fell back to the beach his villages were burned by men of the XXII Mukim who suspected him of colluding with the Dutch.

Most of the pamphlet deals with the course of the expedition. The author notes that war had been declared on 26 March 1873, so that Aceh had fifteen days to prepare before the first encounter inland, and calls that hasty declaration a grave mistake. He describes the reconnaissance of the beach on 6 April, the decision to return to the ships, the landing on 8 April met by a klewang charge of some four hundred Acehnese fighters, the chaotic crossing of the lagoon on 10 April because the bridge was unfit, the capture and abandonment of the Great Mosque on the same day, the reconnaissance around the dalam on 12 April, the heavy rain of 13 April, and the second attack on the mosque on 14 April in which Köhler was killed. He also notes that after the general’s death no one seemed to know for certain where the dalam, the sultan’s palace, lay, until the expedition was finally withdrawn to Java.

The author also reports Köhler’s own view of Aceh. According to the general’s acquaintances in Padang, Köhler used to call Aceh a wasps’ nest, citing Michiels, and judged the planned war against the kingdom to be a political imprudence. He mentions too a conversation between Köhler and the controleur Kraijenhoff, who warned that the Acehnese could muster fifty thousand men and would sacrifice everything to stop the Dutch from gaining a foothold on the shore. Köhler answered the warning with mockery. This testimony is interesting because it shows that some Dutch figures were aware of Aceh’s strength from the outset.

The pamphlet contains small details about Dutch knowledge of Aceh in 1873. The expedition carried “Marine-schetsjes”, sketches of the terrain compiled from information given by two Chinese guides, the interpreter Sidi Tahil and a man from Bengkulu named Mohamet Akifin, with the coastline based on naval surveys. The guides said that the dalam lay where a great tree stood, measured from the sea at about 3,600 metres. The author also describes the materials of Acehnese houses, namely horizontal and vertical beams, plank floors, laths of areca or nibung palm, double ploepoe walls and an underfloor space enclosed with coconut fronds, when arguing that bridge material could have been taken from houses near the lagoon.

Reading the pamphlet from an Acehnese standpoint calls for a double awareness. On the one hand it is a colonial officer’s defence of his commander, full of complaints about technical failings, the bridge, the scaling ladders and the guns left on the beach. On the other hand those very complaints give a clear picture of the success of Aceh’s defence in 1873: fighters charging with the klewang on the beach, defences around the Great Mosque, fire from the dalam and from across the river, and the ability to drive back the first expedition. The pamphlet itself becomes a witness that the Dutch defeat of 1873 was not merely a technical failure but also the fruit of organised resistance.

For Acehnologi, the pamphlet strengthens several lines of inquiry. It provides data on the beginning of the Aceh War and on how the failure of the first expedition was debated in the Netherlands and the Indies. It preserves the name and role of Acehnese figures such as Teuku Nek of Meuraxa, revealing the difficult position of local leaders between the sultanate and a foreign power. It is also an example of how colonial knowledge about Aceh was built from the information of intermediaries such as a Malay interpreter, Chinese guides and an informant from Bengkulu. Read together with Acehnese sources, the pamphlet allows us to reconstruct the beginning of the war not as the story of one general’s failure but as the story of a society’s success in defending the centre of its sovereignty.
