Shariʿa and Social Engineering: peta pembacaan FeenerShariʿa and Social Engineering: a reading map of Feener

Kajian historis; batas pembacaan mengikuti tahun sumberHistorical study; interpretation is bounded by the source date

Feener reads sharia implementation through intellectual history, education, bureaucracy, courts and moral regulation. His monograph connects law with social transformation in Aceh.

Rujukan utama: Feener, R. Michael. 2013. Shariʿa and Social Engineering: The Implementation of Islamic Law in Contemporary Aceh, Indonesia. Oxford University Press. Preface; bab 1–9, hlm. 1–277.

The central argument is that state sharia cannot be explained solely through elite competition or nostalgia for the sultanate. Its architects also advanced visions of a future society. Feener follows their translation into education, fatwas, legislation, adjudication, bureaucratic preaching and sanctions.

Read chapter 2 for historical context, chapter 3 for education and authority, chapter 4 for the ulama council, chapter 5 for legislation, chapter 6 for courts, chapter 7 for the sharia agency, chapter 8 for policing and sanctions, and chapter 9 for the synthesis. This is Feener’s scholarly interpretation of his research period, rather than a normative judgment on Islam or an automatically current account of the law.
