Edward Aspinall dan tesis ‘dari kombatan ke kontraktor’Edward Aspinall and the ‘combatants to contractors’ thesis
Meneliti Aceh sejak awal 2000-anResearching Aceh since the early 2000s
Edward Aspinall, peneliti Australian National University, adalah salah satu sarjana asing terpenting tentang konflik dan perdamaian Aceh. Karyanya meliputi kajian proses damai bersama Harold Crouch (2003), analisis MoU Helsinki (2005), monografi Islam and Nation (2009), dan artikel ‘Combatants to Contractors’ di jurnal Indonesia (April 2009).
Edward Aspinall, a researcher at the Australian National University, is among the most important foreign scholars of conflict and peace in Aceh. His work includes a study of the peace process with Harold Crouch (2003), an analysis of the Helsinki MoU (2005), the monograph Islam and Nation (2009), and the article ‘Combatants to Contractors’ in the journal Indonesia (April 2009). The last mapped how former GAM combatants became contractors and sparked debate in Aceh on research ethics and the image of the struggle.
Artikel ‘Combatants to Contractors: The Political Economy of Peace in Aceh’ dibuka dengan gambaran rumah megah Darwis Jeunieb, mantan komandan yang kini lebih peduli memastikan bekas anak buahnya bekerja.
‘Combatants to Contractors: The Political Economy of Peace in Aceh’ opens with the grand house of Darwis Jeunieb, a former commander now more concerned with ensuring his ex-fighters have jobs. Aspinall maps six income sources of ex-combatants: ordinary economic activity, reintegration aid, involvement in rehabilitation and reconstruction, pajak nanggroe or security money, private business such as a company linked to Muzakir Manaf, and networks of GAM figures in government. He notes that GAM contractors largely did low-skilled construction work alongside better-established players.
In Aceh the article was met with concern that informants’ ‘confessions’ to foreign researchers might become a ‘time bomb’ when read by later generations. The elders’ warning walanca walance was invoked to urge that every act be considered twice because someone is always watching and writing. The critique set Aspinall beside Damien Kingsbury, Michelle Ann Miller and William Nessen, also close to GAM circles.
Aspinall’s place in Aceh studies shows two sides of foreign scholarship: the ability to open data hard for local researchers to reach, and the power imbalance when Aceh becomes ‘fish in a big aquarium’. The recommended response is not emotional but to encourage young Acehnese researchers to read, weigh and write equal counter-studies.
Aspinall's work, like Anthony Reid's, is criticised for not specifically examining the Acehnese ulama despite often touching on Islam.
