Kesarjanaan internasional tentang AcehInternational scholarship on Aceh
Akhir abad ke-19 hingga pascatsunami (setelah 2004)Late 19th century to the post-tsunami era (after 2004)
Knowledge about Aceh has long been shaped by scholars from outside, from Snouck Hurgronje to the generation of post-conflict researchers. Anthony Reid is often regarded as the founder of modern Aceh studies, while John R. Bowen and Denys Lombard opened up, respectively, the Gayo world and the statecraft of Sultan Iskandar Muda's era. After the tsunami and the peace accord, Aceh became the subject of a large wave of master's, doctoral and postdoctoral research. This abundance has not yet been matched by efforts to gather and frame the literature as a coherent field.
The scholarship on Aceh can be read as a sequence of generational layers. The colonial layer is represented by Snouck Hurgronje, whose account was also the first detailed reference on the Gayo, in 1903. The next layer comprises major historians and anthropologists: Anthony Reid, with his broad interest in Acehnese history and culture; Denys Lombard, with his study of the Acehnese kingdom under Iskandar Muda; and John R. Bowen, with his ethnography of the Gayo. In literature and Sufism, Vladimir Braginsky placed Hamzah Fansuri within the history of Malay letters, while Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas is inseparable from the study of Hamzah Fansuri and Nur al-Din al-Raniri. Mark Durie examined Acehnese from the standpoint of grammar and discourse structure.
Later generations have largely worked on politics and conflict. Edward Aspinall, a student of Harold Crouch, has written prolifically on Aceh through a political lens, including on the political economy of peace. Names such as Antje Missbach have also emerged, alongside Acehnese researchers such as Dina Afrianty, who works on gender. Regional research centres, above all the Asia Research Institute (ARI) in Singapore, turned Aceh into a sustained research programme, publishing on everything from history and culture to post-conflict and post-tsunami conditions.
There has also been a current from within. From around 2000, work by Acehnese academics, particularly from IAIN Ar-Raniry, was channelled to Yogyakarta publishers so it could reach a national readership, and some of it was later published in Malaysia by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's press in the Meukuta Alam series. The central critique is that writing on Aceh is abundant but scattered; one Dutch scholarly organisation has even catalogued hundreds of titles, from Snouck's era to works by Acehnese authors of the 1980s. The challenge is to turn this mass of literature into a systematic scholarly framework.
Scholars after Anthony Reid include Edward Aspinall (with a political lens), Antje Missbach and gender researcher Dina Afrianty; V. Braginsky studied Acehnese literature and Sufism within Malay studies, and Mark Durie studied Acehnese grammar. A Dutch scholarly body has gathered hundreds of titles on Aceh on a single website.
Scholars in Europe, Asia and America have long sought out Acehnese works, through plunder or purchase, so that some Acehnese manuscripts now lie abroad. Works by and about Aceh have been digitised through acehbooks.org, a Dutch-initiated site.

Much early scholarship viewed Aceh, and the Gayo even more so, from the standpoint of dominant powers. Modern scholarship has tried to bring forward the voices of the communities studied.
