Politik AcehAcehnese Politics
Acehnese Politics is the sub-discipline that aims to build a conceptual understanding of how Acehnese people do politics, grounded in the values and culture that set the standards of political behaviour. Political literature on Aceh surged after 2005, but most of it describes practice rather than political philosophy. The module maps political science, political sociology, political anthropology, political economy and political psychology onto the Acehnese experience. Its central question is whether Aceh needs Western theory, Islamic statecraft (siyasah syar‘iyyah) or political concepts of its own.
A joke among Banda Aceh academics captures Acehnese politics with the gesture plintek: the index finger looks straight, but its tip is slightly bent. The joke opens the question of how Acehnese people actually speak and act politically. Public life in Aceh is rarely free of political talk, and after 2005 politics became the second-largest field of discourse after history, with contributions from outside scholars such as Edward Aspinall and from young Acehnese writers. Yet there is still no comprehensive work on what Acehnese Politics means as a concept.
Using George A. Kourvetaris's typology, almost every domain of political study has been practised in Aceh: a state in the form of a sultanate; movements carrying the spirit of dîn, as with Daud Beureueh, and the spirit of history, as with Hasan di Tiro; the only province with local political parties; a nanggroe system of governance with its own references; and ideological processes of Islamisation, Westernisation and Indonesianisation. Studies of practice exist, including Denys Lombard and Amirul Hadi on the seventeenth century, M.B. Hooker on Aceh's legal codes, Anthony Reid on the war against the Dutch, and work on the Social Revolution and on Daud Beureueh's thought.
The main difficulty is the habit of reading Aceh's rise after the fall of Malacca in 1511 as a ‘transfer of Malay power’ rather than as the success of Acehnese statecraft. Hussin Mutalib's work, for instance, notes Sultan Ali Mughayat Syah's unification of the coastal states and Iskandar Muda's strengthening of Islamic foundations with his scholars, but within a Malay-world frame. The module also weighs definitions of politics from Max Weber, Karl Marx and Aristotle. Planned sub-topics include the roots of Acehnese politics, political thinkers, political theory, paradigms of power and political practice.
Aceh's cosmopolitanism produced a dynamic political culture. The position of religion before power and the effort to keep matters of belief free of outside political intervention are therefore central topics of Acehnese politics. Hasan di Tiro offers an example of how intellectual works can be written as the ideological basis of a struggle.
The field is also proposed as a course on Acehnese politics within political science programmes. Several local concepts, such as nanggroe, peutimang and politik meubisan, still await development as theoretical vocabulary.
