Sosiologi AcehAcehnese Sociology

Acehnese Sociology is the sub-discipline that seeks foundations for a science of Acehnese society, covering social structure, institutions, and the study of port towns (bandar) and villages (gampong). Compared with history and anthropology, Aceh's contribution to sociology is acknowledged as the weakest. Sociological approaches arrived from 1974 through a research training programme with a Weberian and Parsonian orientation. The module asks whether Aceh can generate sociological concepts of its own by tracing ideas of reason and self-awareness in its intellectual history.

The weakness of Acehnese sociology is explained historically. Colonial anthropology turned Aceh into an object of study and a tool for breaking resistance, so that Aceh continued to be seen as a ‘village’ despite having towns and ports. Following Bryan S. Turner, sociology emerged as a positivist science that became a national discipline serving state policy, carrying a bias that saw the West as dynamic and the East as static. Immanuel Wallerstein located sociology on the axis of the present and within civil society, distinct from anthropology's concern with ‘the rest’. In Aceh, social-science research training from 1974 grew out of a 1971 proposal by Clifford Geertz to the Ford Foundation, and departments of sociology and anthropology appeared only after the 2000s. Bahrein Sugihen's study of modernisation in North Aceh is cited as a pioneering work.

The central questions are posed frankly: did Aceh experience events like those that gave rise to sociology in Europe, produce thinkers of the calibre of Marx, Weber and Durkheim, or develop a firm school of thought? The experience of Arab sociologists, who framed a project ‘towards an Arab sociology’ yet remained dependent on Western theory, serves as a mirror. The answer offered lies in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when the thought of Hamzah Fansuri and his student Shams al-Din al-Sumatrani is said to have fostered Acehnese self-awareness. Whereas Europe's post-Hegelian enlightenment separated faith from public affairs, Aceh's ‘enlightenment’ instead united belief with the social order.

The planned sequence moves from spirit, to how reason grasps spirit, to the resulting form of consciousness, the formation of the Acehnese individual, the desired social order and, finally, a philosophy of policy for a sovereign society. Sub-topics include Acehnese sociological theory, social structure, institutions, and the study of bandar and gampong.

Sociology is framed as the study of ‘us’, anthropology as the study of ‘them’. Three models are offered for building an Acehnese sociology: adopting a Western lens, devising one's own formula, or moving back and forth between the two. The proposed sub-fields are political sociology, the sociology of religion, the sociology of knowledge and intellectual sociology, and the discussion closes with three spaces: social imagination, social consciousness and inner life.

The colonial habit of treating Aceh as a village hindered sociological study of Acehnese towns and ports.

Cermin sosiologi ArabThe mirror of Arab sociology

Kesulitan membangun sosiologi Arab menunjukkan beratnya membangun sosiologi lokal tanpa bergantung pada teori Barat. The struggle to build an Arab sociology shows how hard it is to build a local sociology without depending on Western theory.

Must an Acehnese sociology arise from an event on the scale of the French Revolution, or are upheavals such as the tsunami and the 2005 peace enough to generate its own theory?
