Identitas Gayo dalam konstruksi ke-Aceh-anGayo identity within Acehneseness
Dari masa kerajaan hingga pasca-konflikFrom the kingdom era to the post-conflict period
Gayo identity, belonging to the highland society of central Aceh, is a contested identity, claimed at once by Acehneseness, Indonesianness and Malayness. Older anthropological literature barely recognised the Gayo as a distinct group, and the classic accounts tended to view them through the lens of the coastal Acehnese. The analysis asks whether the Gayo can be regarded as a civilisation in their own right, possessing their own culture, language and history. Its central claim is that the Gayo are both distinct from the Acehnese and one of the axes on which Acehnese identity was built.
The first problem of Gayo identity is one of under-representation. In the standard reference work on Indonesian ethnography the Gayo appear merely as an Acehnese sub-group identified by their language, and the classic scholarship on customary law did not treat them as a separate adat law area. The anthropologist Joel S. Kahn observed that John Bowen's ethnography was the first modern attempt to see the Gayo through Gayo eyes; before it, the only detailed account was Snouck Hurgronje's 1903 study, which tended to present the Gayo from the vantage point of the politically and culturally dominant Acehnese.
This raises the question of the Gayo as a civilisation. If civilisation means an identity with its own culture, language and history, the Gayo meet all three criteria, although their identity is hard to disentangle from Islam as a religious civilisation. Comparisons with the Javanese, Malays, Sundanese, Madurese and Balinese show how a local identity can become a national asset or, conversely, be eclipsed by a dominant one. On this reading the Gayo are doubly eclipsed: by Aceh at the provincial level and by Java through Indonesian nationalism.
The analysis also borrows Denys Lombard's cultural topography, in which the centre preserves authenticity while the coasts change faster through contact with outside currents. By that logic Bener Meriah and Takengon resemble the Aceh of two or three decades earlier, and the Gayo highlands become the last bastion of Acehnese cultural reproduction, whether or not the Gayo themselves claim to be Acehnese. Present-day tensions are read as the product of developmental mismanagement and prolonged conflict rather than as a historical rupture.
A Gayo-language verse affirms that Aceh is the younger sibling and Linge the elder, naming Buntul Linge as the land of origin. Observations in Bener Meriah note wedding feasts served on the floor and eaten communally, unlike urban buffet-style receptions, and children's ceremonial dress dominated by black, echoing the Gayo traditional house; the Gayo are also renowned for their arts and dance.
Borrowing the common Malaysian definition of a Malay as Muslim and Malay-speaking, a Gayo can be defined as someone who speaks Gayo, lives Gayo culture and was born in the Gayo lands. The analysis also suggests that, like Bali, the Gayo could stand as a civilisational asset through culture and religion without resorting to administrative secession or separatism; Kahn lists the layers of domination over the Gayo: Acehnese dominance, Dutch colonialism, post-independence conflict and the New Order.
Gagasan kunciKey ideas
Identitas yang diperebutkanA contested identity
Gayo berada di persimpangan tiga imajinasi besar: ke-Aceh-an, ke-Indonesia-an, dan ke-Melayu-an, sehingga identitasnya selalu dinegosiasikan. The Gayo stand at the intersection of three larger imaginaries, Acehnese, Indonesian and Malay, so their identity is always under negotiation.
Gayo sebagai peradabanThe Gayo as a civilisation
A distinctive culture, language and history make the Gayo a candidate civilisation, although the challenge is to reconcile regional particularity with Islam as a religious civilisation.
Benteng terakhir ke-Aceh-anLast bastion of Acehneseness
Because cultural change travels from the coast inland, the Gayo highlands are read as the space where older elements of Acehnese culture survive longest.
