Sejarah Total dan sejarah lokal dalam studi AcehTotal history and local history in Aceh studies
Total history is an approach that treats the past as an entire civilisation rather than confining itself to court politics. In Aceh studies it is proposed as a way of reconstructing every element of culture, including material culture such as dress, dance, the rencong dagger, houses, food and the jeungki rice-pounder. Local history is understood as total history applied within a bounded area. The approach corrects the tendency to write Acehnese history from the standpoint of the palace and politics.
Sumber lokal mendapat kedudukan baru.
The model is Anthony Reid's work on Southeast Asia from 1450 to 1680. Onghokham described total history as a history of civilisation covering geography, demography, dress, popular and royal festivities, housing, material culture, food, sexuality and the relative position of women and men. The concept of material culture is taken from Tapper and McLachlan: on one side technology with its skills and productive knowledge, on the other the resulting goods, whether used, exchanged or built as immovable structures. Akh. Minhaji explained the logical link: local history limits its area, but everything within that area must be studied totally. Social history, widespread in Indonesia, is a close relative of this approach.
The approach also requires interdisciplinary cooperation. Guenther Roth read Weber at three levels of analysis: sociological, historical and situational; Mustafa Emirbayer showed how Durkheim combined sociology and history; and the anthropology of ritual has likewise returned to history. Onghokham summed up that social sciences tend to offer a snapshot, whereas history explains the process by which the present came about.
Local sources gain new standing. Following Taufik Abdullah and Soemarsaid Moertono, traditional historiography and legend are no longer mere fairy tales but legitimate sources and symbols that ‘say something about something’; beliefs alive in society are historical facts in their own right. For Aceh this means hikayat and oral tradition can be used alongside archives. Suggested student research topics include distinctive Acehnese dress, dances, the rencong, the Acehnese house, food and drink, and the jeungki.
