Tiga cermin sejarah Aceh: Islam, Melayu, dan IndonesiaThree mirrors of Acehnese history: Islam, the Malay world and Indonesia
Persoalan pemosisian sejarah Aceh dalam ruang dan waktuThe problem of situating Acehnese history in space and time
Acehnese history is usually placed within three frames, each producing a different image. In the history of Islamic culture in the archipelago Aceh appears as a sovereign kingdom; in Malay history it can be cast as a coloniser of the Malay world; in Indonesian history it has two faces, a contributor to national history and a restive region seeking to secede. Portuguese and Dutch accounts add a fourth mirror, written in the service of conquest. This dilemma of position has shaped the writing of Acehnese history to this day.
Persoalan waktu memperumit keadaan.
Cermin kolonial memperlihatkan distorsi lain.
Before Acehnese history can be interpreted it must be positioned, that is, placed in the space and time within which past events are examined. The frame of Islamic cultural history makes Aceh part of the expansion of Islam in the archipelago and treats the Acehnese kingdom as a sovereign state. The frame of Malay history tends to magnify Malay identity, so that Aceh appears as a power that subdued Malay polities. The Indonesian frame is two sides of one coin: Aceh's contribution to national history on the one hand, and the history of Acehnese resistance to Indonesian domination on the other.
The question of time complicates matters further. Taufik Abdullah observed that, empirically, 'Indonesia' is a twentieth-century phenomenon, so national history is strictly valid only for that period. The term 'region' (daerah) is also ambiguous: administratively it denotes a tier of territory, politically it is set against the 'centre'. As a result, Aceh before the twentieth century, which was in fact a history of a centre, is read as a history of the margins. In Malaysia, by contrast, Acehnese history is regarded as central. Because Aceh was a nation with its own system of government before the nation-state model reached the Muslim world, some Acehnese cite that history as proof that they have no historical bond with Indonesia.
The colonial mirror adds further distortion. The Dutch wrote about Aceh for the purposes of colonisation, and Hoesein Djajadiningrat noted that Portuguese chroniclers described Aceh's kings as descendants of a slave, an old form of insult in Acehnese culture. Anthony Reid likewise judged that Aceh, like most regions outside Java and Bali, had been poorly served by the literature. From this follows the demand that Acehnese history be written as the history of a centre of civilisation, not as an appendix to Indonesian or Malaysian historiography.
