John R. Bowen
Antropolog Amerika; etnografi Gayo dari akhir abad ke-20American anthropologist; Gayo ethnography from the late 20th century
John R. Bowen is an American anthropologist whose work constitutes the first modern anthropological account of the Gayo. Unlike colonial accounts that saw the Gayo through the eyes of the coastal Acehnese, Bowen sought to see the Gayo through their own eyes. He combines history and anthropology and has carried out comparative research spanning Aceh and France. He has also visited Banda Aceh frequently to mentor young researchers.
Bowen's significance is clearest in the assessment of the anthropologist Joel S. Kahn. According to Kahn, before Bowen the Gayo had been documented in detail only by Snouck Hurgronje in 1903, and that account, like those that followed, tended to present the Gayo from the standpoint of the Acehnese, who had long dominated the region politically and culturally. Drawing on extended fieldwork in Gayo villages and among Gayo migrants in Jakarta, Bowen reversed that perspective. Kahn also listed the layers of domination that shaped Gayo history: Acehnese dominance, Dutch colonialism, post-independence political conflict, and the rise of the New Order.
Bowen's work shows that politics and socio-cultural change among the Gayo have distinctive features from which other societies can learn. One frequently cited finding concerns oral tradition: Gayo listeners were familiar with the formula that makes Linge, and hence the Gayo, the elder brother of the more powerful Acehnese, and they accepted it as authoritative. He has also examined how the Gayo work scriptural narratives, such as the story of Cain and Abel, into their social life.
Bowen belongs to a tradition of comparative fieldworkers that includes Clifford Geertz and Martin van Bruinessen. He has also written on the development of Southeast Asian studies in the United States and on the relationship between area studies and the disciplines. Through his work, Gayo studies became readable internationally, and his legacy is seen as one the Gayo community itself should carry forward.
Bowen used history and anthropology to analyse Gayo society, often mentored young researchers in Banda Aceh, and also conducted comparative research on Aceh and France.
