‘Ureung Aceh poh ureung Aceh’: dari kaphe ke kekerasan antarsesama‘Acehnese killing Acehnese’: from kaphe to intra-Acehnese violence

Dari Perang Aceh hingga pascadamaiFrom the Aceh War to the post-peace era

Islam came to Aceh peacefully and united the Acehnese, so religion was not regarded as a source of violence. The construction of musoh (enemy) shifted: from the kaphe (infidel) who threatened the land, to anyone helping the kaphe, to Muslims obstructing sharia, and then to ‘Si PAI’. Finally violence took place among Acehnese themselves in the name of the ‘jamaah’ (in-group), over socio-political and economic differences, a phenomenon summed up as ureung Aceh poh ureung Aceh, ‘Acehnese killing Acehnese’.

When Islam became the foundation of life, it ordered every pillar of the kingdom ideologically, though some pre-Islamic cultural heritage persisted. The enemy then was whoever was not Muslim and disturbed the people's life. The expulsion of the Portuguese from Malacca is remembered as proof that infidel power must not gain a foothold in Aceh, and graves of Acehnese martyrs are said to remain in Malacca. The concepts of kaphe and prang sabi (holy war) later became the ideology of war against the Dutch.

The same logic produced enemies from within: anyone who helped the kaphe. This explains the social revolution or civil war in Aceh, when some Acehnese were seen as collaborating with the Dutch. After independence, the enemy became Muslims who obstructed Islamic law in Aceh. During the GAM–RI conflict, anyone thought to work for ‘Si PAI’ (Destroyer of Islam) could be killed even if Muslim, a wound still unresolved.

After the peace, the construction of musoh no longer rested on belief. Acehnese seemed closer to the kaphe and to former ‘Si PAI’ than to one another; terror and threats from Acehnese to Acehnese were made not in the name of religion but in the name of the jamaah. This shift eroded the bonds of brotherhood, and quietly Acehnese came to regard one another as musoh, even if not always settled through war.

This socio-historical reading also offers a way out. If Islam is the ‘glue’ of Acehnese identity and custom its cosmological bond, then Acehnese identity needs to be reformulated on the basis of Aceh’s actual cosmology and taught from kindergarten to university, because collective memory is formed only through shared learning practised by communities and government. Every great nation has experienced violence; its thinkers choose which events inspire progress and which are simply to be commemorated. A three-system model is proposed: the religious system plants a non-violent ideology, the cultural system shapes ways of thinking, and the knowledge system builds the best and most creative minds. If the three work in synergy, violence is expected to fade gradually, although building tasamuh (tolerance) amid differing interpretations of Islam will take a long time because violence is deeply rooted.
