Islamologi Aceh: meurunoe dan tameng kosmologi negeriIslamology in Aceh: meurunoe and the cosmological shield
Islamology means the study of Islam, also called Islamic Studies or dirasah islamiyyah. In Aceh the activity is known as meurunoe (learning), and to go jak meurunoe or jak meununtut beyond one’s village almost always meant studying Islam at a dayah or zawiyah. Centres of learning are spread across all four quarters of Aceh, so the tradition is read as a ‘cosmological shield’ guarding the land’s key points. Its distinctive traits are openness to knowledge, firmness against anything that violates creed, and a close interweaving of Islam and culture.
Mapping this tradition geographically shows an even spread. In the north-east stands the historic dayah of Cot Kala; to the south-east, down to Singkil near Barus, lies a tradition of learning of significance in the religious history of the world; in the south grew the scholarly network of Labuhan Haji; in the west, the area around the Baiturrahman Mosque in Banda Aceh was once a site of Islamic study that the young now barely remember; and in the north, from Aceh Besar to Aceh Utara, stand dayah whose students come from both inside and outside Aceh. Today these institutions include not only dayah but also madrasah and universities, and coastal districts almost always have them.
The contrast with Java is central to this reading. In Java, sea and mountain are seen as dominant in shaping the spiritual landscape and in generating the spirit of power. In Aceh, apart from Southeast Aceh, the land’s boundaries seem to be marked by institutions of Islamic learning, so that the centre of Acehnese consciousness is knowledge, above all the study of Islam. Most of these institutions lie in the first landscape of rural life: coast, rice fields and rivers.
Because of this character, educational models imported from outside Acehnese culture tended to meet resistance. When school and madrasah models appeared, for instance, part of society rejected them as associated with the colonisers’ ways. Seen this way, dayah-oriented education served as a defensive system for the Acehnese, particularly before their encounter with the Dutch and later with Indonesia.
