Dari teungku ke ustaz: pergeseran otoritas keagamaanFrom teungku to ustaz: a shift in religious authority

Sejak 1980-an, menguat setelah tsunami 2004From the 1980s, intensifying after the 2004 tsunami

The move from teungku to ustaz captures a change in where authority over Islamic education in Aceh comes from. Teungku is a title inherited from the traditional dayah system, hierarchical and rooted in the village. Ustaz spread as a religious title after the modern pondok pesantren model arrived in the 1980s, and became more prominent through outside missionary networks after the tsunami. The ustaz is widely seen as a challenge to the charisma of the teungku, a pattern comparable to the old kaum muda versus kaum tua contest in the Malay world.

For centuries, authority over Islamic education in Aceh lay with the teungku, local religious experts who served both in the dayah, where scholars were reproduced, and as guardians of the community. Acehnese ulama acted as advisers to sultans and sultanas, led jihad against the Dutch, and figured in the Darul Islam (DI/TII) rebellion of the 1950s. Crucially, these movements were driven not from the palace but from dayah scattered across Aceh. The title teungku itself was graded, from the Teungku Chik at the top to the Teungku Meunasah in the village.

The ustaz, literally ‘teacher’, entered by a different route. Once the modern pondok pesantren model was adopted from Gontor in the 1980s, pupils addressed their teachers as ustaz, and these teachers were typically graduates of leading pesantren in Java. Two decades on, the term had become an accepted religious title. After the tsunami, young ustaz from Java arrived through the Tablighi Jama‘at and through communities calling themselves followers of the sunna, teaching Qur’an memorisation and leading prayers.

The shift has generated friction. In one part of North Aceh, dayah adherents and an ustaz-led community clashed over post-prayer supplications and control of a mosque. Conversely, the title teungku has migrated beyond education, adopted by GAM commanders and post-peace politicians. Beneath this lies a deeper issue: some parents now prefer modern pondok because they open paths to further study as far as the Middle East, while dayah graduates are seen as lacking a secure future. The analysis focuses on teachers rather than institutions, so the long-term institutional impact remains a question for further research.

Teachers in general and state religious schools in Aceh were traditionally addressed as 'guru' or 'Pak', not ustaz or teungku. During the conflict the title ustaz remained confined to modern pesantren and towns, while dayah teungku kept their village role; people also feared armed 'GAM teungku' more than dayah teungku.
