Embarkasi Haji Aceh: dari Sabang ke Bandara Sultan Iskandar MudaThe Aceh hajj embarkation: from Sabang to Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport
1950-an hingga kini1950s to the present
The departure point of the Acehnese hajj has moved with political and technological change. Collective memory preserves the ports of Ulee Lheue, Idi and Sabang; from the 1950s to the 1970s pilgrims gathered at the Sabang pilgrims' hostel before sailing to Jeddah. Once the hajj moved to air travel, the government opened an embarkation point at Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport, which became a full embarkation from the late 1980s. As the Indonesian airport closest to the Holy Land, it reinforces Aceh's image as a gateway to the hajj.
Sejak akhir 1980-an Aceh resmi menjadi embarkasi penuh yang menerbangkan kelompok terbang (kloter) langsung tanpa transit domestik.
After the transfer of sovereignty the Ministry of Religious Affairs took charge of the hajj in Indonesia. Aceh, part of the province of North Sumatra until 1956, then acquired its own regional religious affairs office to manage the pilgrimage. Embarkation was at first still centred on Sabang and Banda Aceh. With the Rubiah quarantine station gone, departures from the 1950s to the 1970s were concentrated at the pilgrims' hostel in Sabang town, known as Kampung Haji. Pilgrims from across the province assembled there before sailing to Jeddah; under the New Order the provincial government and the navy at one point ran a dedicated pilgrim ship from Sabang.
Once all Indonesian pilgrims switched to air travel in 1979, the Acehnese no longer left from Sabang. The government opened the Aceh Hajj Embarkation at Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport in Aceh Besar, with a hostel in Banda Aceh to house pilgrims before their flights. From the late 1980s Aceh has been a full embarkation point, flying pilgrim groups (kloter) directly without domestic transit. In the 2024 season, for example, the first group of 393 pilgrims from Banda Aceh flew direct on 29 May 2024. Each year a dozen or more groups depart from this airport, the closest in Indonesia to the Holy Land, which often makes the flight shorter than from other regions.
The move from Ulee Lheue, Idi and Sabang to the airport marks a shift from harbours shadowed by colonial surveillance to state-managed pre-departure procedures. Yet the social rites persisted: family convoys from the village, today often dozens strong, accompany pilgrims to the hostel gate and wave them off from a distance. The embarkation point thus became a meeting place of national hajj bureaucracy and village solidarity.
