Tipologi jemaah haji AcehA typology of Acehnese pilgrims
Masa kiniContemporary
Ethnographic observation in hajj-preparation classes, at the embarkation point and in the Holy Land reveals many types of Acehnese pilgrim: the village pilgrim, the experienced pilgrim, the intellectual, the resistant pilgrim, the networked pilgrim, women pilgrims, trader pilgrims, the accumulating pilgrims of Gayo and those 'held hostage by time'. The typology is fluid rather than a set of fixed boxes; individuals move between types. It serves as a lens on how religious, social and economic capital are negotiated in the hajj, against the ever-present backdrop of the hajj industry.
The 'village pilgrim' sits in the front row of the preparation class, writing in large letters when to pronounce the intention and how many circuits to walk around the Ka‘ba. Their knowledge comes from village study circles and elders' stories; they depend entirely on the mutawwif and group leader, which leaves them vulnerable to being steered to particular shops or add-on packages, yet in them one sees the most unguarded sincerity. The 'experienced pilgrim', who has done the umrah or accompanied relatives, carries a mental map of the Grand Mosque, acts as an informal guide and turns the mutawwif's monopoly of information into knowledge shared among pilgrims. The 'intellectual pilgrim', often a teacher, extension worker, office employee or well-read businessperson, brings a highlighted manual of hajj fiqh, raises questions about differing legal opinions and demands transparency about pilgrims' rights.
The 'resistant pilgrim' is determined not to be exploited by the hajj industry: refusing extras, working out routes alone and sharing maps of toilets, bus timetables and lists of clinics in WhatsApp groups, without losing respect for religious authority. The 'networked pilgrim' travels repeatedly as an official or escort; the position is ambivalent and draws admiration mixed with envy in the coffee shops. 'Women pilgrims' build intimate networks through rotating savings groups, matching prayer garments and mutual watchfulness, including care for elderly women, overturning stereotypes of weakness. 'Trader pilgrims' read the prices of dates and cloth like the weather, blending worship and commerce.
In Gayo, coffee farmers become 'accumulating pilgrims', gathering gold harvest by harvest and praying at Arafat that their gardens resist disease and coffee prices hold. The 'time-bound pilgrims' hold waiting numbers for years and arrange their lives around a departure date. All these types meet within the hajj industry, from paid preparation classes and pilgrimage tours to wheelchairs and group vests, which both helps and commodifies. The very fluidity of the typology shows that the hajj is a rite constantly re-created by people carrying their own histories, hopes and interests.
