Delapan bidang, satu tubuhEight disciplines, one body

Sejarah, kosmologi, filsafat, sosiologi, antropologi, sastra, religi dan politik membaca spirit yang sama dari sudut berbeda, sehingga pengetahuan Aceh selalu lintas bidang.History, cosmology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature, religion and politics read the same spirit from different angles, so knowledge of Aceh is always cross-disciplinary.

Keberatan ketiga menyangkut kedudukan peneliti.

The seventh thesis holds that history, cosmology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature, religion and politics read the same spirit from different angles, so that knowledge of Aceh is always cross-disciplinary. The eight disciplines of Acehnologi are therefore not eight boxes each with its own object, but eight windows facing one room. The thesis rejects two tendencies at once: the tendency of modern disciplines to divide Aceh into pieces studied separately by historians, anthropologists and political scientists, and the opposite tendency to speak of Aceh in sweeping generalities without any discipline at all. What it offers is a unity that still respects differences of perspective, a body with many senses, each grasping a different side of the same reality.

The conceptual basis of the thesis lies in the idea of worldview. The entries on the Acehnologi worldview and tawhid, prophecy and the hereafter as the foundation of the Acehnese worldview place all knowledge under one horizon of belief, while the structure of the world: origin, meaning and destiny, the structure of values and the structure of life set out the layers of that horizon. The distinction between the absolutely unseen, the relatively unseen and the witnessed maps realms that can be known in different ways, and the entry on worldview as accumulated experience reminds us that the horizon was formed in history, not dropped from the sky. If the worldview is one, the disciplines that read it can differ only in angle, not in substance.

The most convincing evidence for the thesis is the manuscript. The Mābaina al-Salāṭīn is one text, yet from that one text arise entries placed in different fields. Its copying history, set out in the manuscripts and copies of the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn, is a study in literature and philology. Its port tariffs, in customs and port dues, are economic history. Its calendar of ceremonies, in the great court ceremonies, is the anthropology of ritual. Its thirty-one majelis, in the Commands to All Kings, are political philosophy and an ethics of government. Its list of kings, in the genealogy of the sultans, is dynastic historiography. Even the passage of one copy into the hands of the Governor of Penang is bound up with diplomacy that led to the Anglo-Acehnese commercial treaty of 1819. One manuscript is at once a historical source, a legal text, a literary work and a political document.

Figures show the same. The entry on Syamsuddin as-Sumatrani explicitly calls him a meeting point of several fields: political history, because he sat in the circle of royal decision; diplomatic history, because he was the interlocutor of European envoys; literary and intellectual history, because his works form a link between Hamzah Fansuri and the later Malay Sufi tradition; and the history of memory, because his tomb in Kampung Ketek, Melaka, is now hard to reach. Tun Sri Lanang was the author of the Sulalatus Salatin, a Johor bendahara brought to Aceh after the conquest of Batu Sawar, the first uleebalang of Samalanga, and ancestor of dynasties on both sides of the Strait of Melaka; he is at once a subject of literary, political, historical and funerary-archaeological study. To read such a figure from one discipline alone is to cut up his body.

Local concepts are also cross-disciplinary from birth. The triad hana roh, hana get, han jeut is placed under cosmology, but its content covers the human relation to nature, social sanctions in the gampong, and religious law formulated by the ulama; it is cosmology, sociology and religion in one formulation. The panglima laot is placed under history, but its rereading touches the anthropology of fishing communities, the theory of the state and present-day coastal management policy. Meudagang, hareukat, baynah and beureukat are economics, education and theology at once. The pattern is no accident: a society that understands adat and hukom as bound like essence and attribute does not produce concepts that can be cut along the lines of modern disciplines.

The thesis also serves as a tool for inspecting the building of knowledge itself. When the first formulation of this thesis was drafted, almost half of the links between entries already crossed fields, and that figure can serve as a measure of the network's health. Entries linked only within one field mark places where the building of Acehnologi has not yet come together and needs to be stitched. The inspection also reveals imbalance: in the set of entries compiled from manuscripts and recent studies, history and politics far outnumber cosmology, philosophy and literature. If the eight disciplines truly read the same spirit, this imbalance means that some windows are still rarely opened, and that the resulting picture of Aceh still leans towards events and power rather than meaning and language.

Objections to the thesis deserve serious consideration. The first is the danger of shallowness. Cross-disciplinary work often becomes an excuse for mastering no discipline at all; yet the copying history of the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn demands rigorous philology, reading inscriptions demands epigraphy, and analysing tariffs demands careful economic history. The unity of the body does not abolish the expertise of each organ. The second objection is more philosophical: is there really one spirit that the eight fields read? Acehnese history also shows sharp conflict, between the wujudiyah adherents and their opponents, between uleebalang and ulama, between resistance movements and the state. If the spirit is one, it is a one that contains conflict, not uniformity.

The third objection concerns the position of the researcher. The entries on the anthropology of Islam and the researcher's position, the critique of the category of the East and the cracked mirror of philosophy and history remind us that disciplinary categories themselves were born of a particular history, and that using eight fields without examining their origins means importing the very division one wishes to criticise. The thesis answers that the eight fields are used as perspectives, not as territories of authority. An entry may be placed in one field for the sake of order, but its meaning is whole only when its links reach other fields, just as changing the outlook of Acehnese society demands a change in how knowledge divides itself.

What remains open is the formulation of a cross-disciplinary working procedure that can be taught: how a researcher starts from one manuscript or one concept and then systematically asks what history, cosmology, philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literature, religion and politics say about it. The thin fields also need filling, especially cosmology, philosophy and literature, as does research on perception and the epistemological subject that could explain how one reality appears differently to different perspectives.

In the architecture of Acehnologi, T7 is the partner of T6 (Fricativisation) on the third floor: if T6 supplies the method for turning local knowledge into theory, T7 supplies the map on which that method works. It stands on T3 (Spirit as the source of knowledge), since the unity of the eight fields can be maintained only if they share a source, and on T1 (Aceh as a subject of knowledge), since only a whole subject can be read as a whole. On the fourth floor, T8 (Two axes: palace and ulama), T9 (A maritime and cosmopolitan civilisation), T10 (The crust of civilisation in its intermediaries) and T11 (Dayah, the Haramain, and from teungku to ustaz) supply material that is almost always cross-disciplinary, and on the fifth floor, T12 to T16 demand that war, peace, sharia, demoralisation and Indonesianness be read with all the windows open. From spirit to ideas, from ideas to philosophy, and from philosophy to action and theory, T7 keeps the ladder one body.
