Tauhid, nubuwwah, dan akhirat: tiga pilar worldview AcehTawhid, prophethood and the hereafter: three pillars of the Acehnese worldview
In the map of Islamic studies, world perception sought through questioning and thinking crystallises into the Islamic worldview turning on three pillars: tawhid, prophethood and the hereafter. From these pillars the knowledge structure begins to emerge. In Aceh the three are not only taught as creed but take form in everyday speech, ritual, art and a collective identity expressed in the epithet Serambi Mekkah. These pillars differ from Aceh's Islamic trilogy, which refers to schools and currents, but the two support each other.
Tawhid, prophethood and the hereafter are three articles of faith that answer three basic questions of every worldview: who is the source of all things, how humans know His will, and where all this ends. The map of Islamic studies places them as the outcome of world perception, the questions of origins, the meaning of existence and destiny, sought through questioning and thinking. The Islamic worldview is thus pictured not as dogma descending without process but as a conscious answer to existential questions.
Tawhid is the axis of all reality. In Aceh it is taught through the twenty attributes of Ash'ari theology in the meunasah and dayah and deepened in the tradition of philosophical Sufism. The seventeenth-century debate on wahdat al-wujud between Hamzah Fansuri and Syamsuddin as-Sumatrani on one side and Nuruddin ar-Raniry on the other was among the most important theological debates in the Malay world, and it centred on how to understand tawhid. In everyday speech tawhid lives in the expressions potala and Allah bri, stating that all things belong to and are given by God.
Prophethood is the channel of knowledge and example from God. Aceh's love of the Prophet shows in the maulid celebrated over several months with feasts between villages, in maulid preaching and in reverence for ulama as heirs of the prophets. The concept of the Light of Muhammad in Hamzah Fansuri's thought gives prophethood a cosmic dimension: the prophetic light is understood as the beginning of creation. The ulama network linking Aceh with the Haramayn and the pilgrimage tradition (jak u Arab) tie this pillar to sacred geography.
The hereafter gives worldly life direction and a moral measure. Awareness of it in Aceh lives in samadiyah, communal prayers for the dead, in visits and vows at ulama tombs, and in understanding misfortune as a reminder. Research on this world and the next as ethical time shows that the Acehnese do not separate the two: work, feasts and social relations are lived in the awareness that this world is the field of the hereafter. Acehnese gravestones, with Qur'anic quotations and Sufi verse, are material documents of this pillar.
These three pillars must be distinguished from Aceh's Islamic trilogy of Shafi'i law, Ash'ari theology and al-Ghazali's ethics. The trilogy shows how the pillars are formulated in particular schools and become the doctrinal fence of the dayah. The map of Islamic studies shows that the knowledge structure begins to emerge from these pillars. For Aceh studies the implication is clear: an Acehnese science built on the Islamic worldview must stay connected to the three pillars, so that studies of economy, politics or environment are not cut off from questions of trust, example and accountability.
