Empat belas wilayah kebudayaan AcehThe fourteen cultural zones of Aceh

This mapping divides Aceh into fourteen cultural zones as a working ground for anthropology, from the city of Banda Aceh to the island of Simeulue. Each zone is distinguished by landscape, language, outside influence and the dynamics of identity. The map is explicitly described as preliminary and open to correction. Its purpose is to show that ‘Aceh’ has no single face, contrary to the impression left by colonial ethnography centred on Aceh Besar.

The mapping begins with Banda Aceh as an urban zone where cultures from every district, other provinces and neighbouring countries meet, so that the salient issue is not ethnic identity but competition for positions of power. The second zone is the rice fields, hills and mountains of Aceh Besar from Saree to Lhong, the area once studied by Snouck Hurgronje; hence the critique that the ‘Aceh’ of colonial ethnography was in fact only Aceh Besar. Further zones cover Pidie with its tradition of out-migration, the Samalanga–Krueng Mane corridor with Bireuen as a hub of cultural transit, and the Krueng Mane–Jambo Aye area, once the most prosperous region thanks to industry.

Eastward, Aceh Timur up to Langsa is read as a ‘second shield’ of Acehnese culture, while Langsa to the North Sumatra border shows the sharpest contest of identities, with Javanese culture, Tamiang Malay culture and neighbouring influences. Aceh Tenggara with its Acehnese–Alas–Batak relations, Singkil with its own language and adat, and Subulussalam to Aceh Selatan with the Aneuk Jamee and Kluet peoples are the least studied. On the south-west coast, Aceh Selatan–Aceh Barat Daya is said to have undergone strong ‘Minangisation’, Nagan Raya is seen as the most steadfast keeper of Acehnese culture, Meulaboh–Lamno as a space of acculturation, and Simeulue remains distinct because it is reached only by sea and air.

The boundaries are recognised through everyday markers: the words ranup and bello for betel in Takengon, the term asoe lhok by which natives of Aceh Besar call outsiders ureung blah deh Seulawah or ureung blah deh Geurute, and differing marriage customs among Acehnese themselves. This diversity is treated as an asset, not an obstacle, for an anthropology rooted in Aceh.
