Tiga lanskap budaya: bukit–sawah–laut, bukit–sawah–kampong, hutan–sawah–kampongThree cultural landscapes: hill–paddy–sea, hill–paddy–village, forest–paddy–village

Model untuk membaca masyarakat Aceh melalui tiga pola lanskap. Pola pesisir ‘bukit–sawah–laut’ melahirkan budaya kosmopolis dan kerajaan-kerajaan, pola pedalaman ‘bukit–sawah–kampong’ menjadi wilayah produksi, sedangkan pola ‘hutan–sawah–kampong’ menandai komunitas yang paling terisolasi. Ketiganya dihubungkan oleh sungai (krueng) dan simpul ‘segitiga emas’ pasar–sekolah agama–tempat ibadah. Laut dipandang sebagai titik berangkat memahami Aceh.

A model for reading Acehnese society through three landscape patterns. The coastal ‘hill–paddy–sea’ pattern produced a cosmopolitan culture and the kingdoms, the inland ‘hill–paddy–village’ pattern is the zone of production, and the ‘forest–paddy–village’ pattern marks the most isolated communities. All three are linked by rivers (krueng) and by the ‘golden triangle’ of market, religious school and place of worship. The sea is treated as the starting point for understanding Aceh.

The first pattern, ‘hill–paddy–sea’, is common in Banda Aceh, Pidie, North Aceh and East Aceh. Its communities live close to outside cultures, make contact easily and form a cosmopolitan coastal culture. Almost every kingdom in Acehnese history, Linge excepted, stood by the sea, and most district capitals outside the central highlands are still on the coast. Understanding Aceh is therefore meant to begin with the sea, then move to paddy fields and settlements, and finally to hills and forest.

The second pattern, ‘hill–paddy–village’, is the zone of farming, plantations and livestock. It connects with the coast through rivers and through the ‘golden triangle’, usually located at a crossroads near a river. Here the ureung baroh, coastal people who live by trade and whose towns are places of learning, meet the ureung tunong, inland people who produce food. The third pattern, ‘forest–paddy–village’, describes communities that rarely go down to the larger markets, live from forest and garden produce, buy from village shops on amilan credit, and turn to healers or eleume when ill. It is said to be disappearing under modernisation and was disrupted by transmigration.

Each space has its customary office: the sea has the Panglima Laot, the paddy fields the keujrueng blang, the forest the Panglima Uteun, and the village the geuchik, imum mukim, tuha peut and tuha lapan. At the level of the sultanate this diversity of rules was gathered under the Qanun Syara’ and the Adat Meukuta Alam.
