Sosiologi mengkaji ‘kami’, antropologi mengkaji ‘mereka’Sociology studies ‘us’, anthropology studies ‘them’

Akibatnya, teori Sosiologi Aceh sulit ditemukan.

Sociology and anthropology were born of two different European experiences: Europe's internal upheavals produced sociology, while colonialism produced anthropology. Sociology therefore studies ‘us’, European society itself, while anthropology studies ‘them’, the colonised peoples. This division explains why Aceh was long approached through anthropology and history, even used by the Dutch as a tool to break resistance, so that Aceh continued to be seen as a ‘village’ despite having ports and towns. As a result, theories of Acehnese sociology are hard to find.

Bryan S. Turner describes sociology as a positivist science of society that became a national discipline, its findings on the working class, urban life and crime proving useful for state policy. He also notes that Marx's idea of an Asiatic mode of production carried an Orientalist view which, following Hegel, treated the West as dynamic and the East as static. Immanuel Wallerstein adds that the social science disciplines were organised along three axes: past (history) versus present (economics, political science, sociology); the West versus ‘the rest’ (anthropology and Oriental studies); and the liberal distinction between market, state and civil society.

In the unequal relationship between Europe and its colonies, ‘we’ emerged as the colonising subject and ‘they’ as the object in need of modernisation. Durkheim's notion of primitive society and totemic religion, Weber's ideas on asceticism and Marx's Asiatic mode of production were widely accepted, and within that framework non-Europeans were labelled irrational, unmotivated or inferior by Western standards.

For Aceh the implications are twofold. Anthropological accounts of Aceh began with the Dutch conquest, whereas sociological accounts began only in the early New Order. Bahrein Sugihen's study of modernisation in North Aceh is cited as one of the first works to use sociology as an analytical tool. Any attempt to build an Acehnese sociology must therefore be aware of the biases built into the discipline's own birth.
