Pengetahuan Belanda tentang medan sangat terbatas.

The first Dutch military expedition to Aceh in April 1873 was the opening assault of the Aceh War. It ended with the death of its commander, General J. H. B. Köhler, in front of the Great Mosque of Banda Aceh on 14 April 1873 and the withdrawal of the troops to Java. It became one of the most humiliating defeats of the Netherlands Indies colonial army and at the same time a great victory for the defence of the Sultanate of Aceh. One source recording the course of the expedition in detail, though from the standpoint of the general’s defender, is the pamphlet De Generaal J. H. B. Köhler: eene nalezing van feiten tijdens de eerste expeditie tegen het Rijk van Atjeh, published in Rotterdam in 1884 by an anonymous former field officer.

The background was the deterioration of relations between the Netherlands and Aceh in the early 1870s. On 22 March 1873 the Citadel van Antwerpen, carrying the government commissioner, arrived off Aceh. The next day an envoy of Teuku Nek, Raja Muda Setia, head of Meuraxa, came aboard and declared that his master did not want war. Yet on 26 March 1873 war was declared in a letter from the Government Secretary to the Sultan of Aceh. The pamphlet’s author calls that hasty declaration a grave mistake, since it gave Aceh fifteen days to prepare before the first encounter inland. The commander’s instructions said that after landing the troops should reach the capital and the dalam as fast as possible, in view of the coming rainy monsoon.

Dutch knowledge of the terrain was very limited. The expedition carried terrain sketches compiled from the information of two Chinese guides, the interpreter Sidi Tahil and an informant from Bengkulu, with the coastline from naval surveys. The guides agreed that the dalam lay where a great tree stood, about 3,600 metres from the shore. The sketch showed that the rear of the dalam was closed by an earthen wall, but the Great Mosque and the broken ground around it were not marked. This lack of knowledge would prove very costly.

On 6 April 1873 the troops reconnoitred the beach. They landed without much resistance, but then returned to the ships. From the fortification of Kuta Mugat, an Acehnese stronghold east of the lagoon, came fairly heavy cannon and rifle fire on the returning boats, answered by the ships Djambi and Citadel. Rifle fire, though weak, also came from Kuta Pantai Cermin. On the same day, according to the pamphlet, some Acehnese fighters made an open attack and left eight dead, and about a hundred others with raised klewang broke into the skirmish line. The author regrets the decision to return to the ships, arguing that it led the Acehnese to believe they had forced the Dutch to withdraw and harmed the morale of the troops.

The actual landing took place only on 8 April 1873. This time the navy’s armed boats formed a line closer to the fire of the beach fortifications, so that a naval cadet named B. H. Zimmer was killed and two sailors wounded. Very heavy rifle fire came from Kuta Pantai Cermin, partly from the force that then launched a klewang charge. About four hundred Acehnese fighters charged the newly landed troops, and according to the author more than a fifth of them fell on the spot. The charge, he says, lasted at most five minutes, but showed that the Dutch would face a brave enemy. Kuta Mugat was later abandoned and occupied, and the beach camp was moved to Kuta Pantai Cermin on 11 April.

On 9 April the troops reconnoitred inland, and on 10 April the main column marched toward the dalam. Here came the chaos at the lagoon. The existing bridge was narrow and steep, the engineers’ bridging tools and materials had not yet been unloaded from the hospital ship, and preparations were inadequate. Horses trying to cross slipped and fell into the ditch with their loads, so that ammunition was lost, and the soldiers had to carry burdens meant for horses. The column reached the Great Mosque exhausted under a blazing sun. The mosque, which had been made into a defensive position, was taken after a fight, but the fire that burned the building made the heat inside unbearable. Two officers died of exhaustion, many soldiers collapsed, and toward dusk Köhler ordered the mosque evacuated.

On 11 April the troops rested, buried the dead and organised their camp in the rice fields. On 12 April a reconnaissance tried to see whether the dalam could be attacked from the rear, but it turned back when fired upon, while the camp also faced attacks from the north, east and south. Köhler reported that the rear of the dalam could not be approached because the ground was a chain of stockades and defiles. On 13 April heavy rain turned the camp into a mud pool, and on that day it was decided to attack the mosque again and to make scaling ladders.

On 14 April 1873 the mosque was stormed a second time, and immediately afterwards General Köhler was killed. Command passed to Colonel van Daalen. According to the pamphlet, after the general’s death no one knew for certain the plan for further operations or where the dalam lay, and the commanders gathered inside the mosque judged the situation critical. Some even favoured abandoning the position. On 16 April one more unsuccessful attack was made. The expedition was finally pulled back to the beach camp and then to Java. The failure was later examined by a secret commission of inquiry, and General Whitton, an artillery officer, wrote a report judging that the dalam could still have been taken had the troops worked with energy and spirit.

For Aceh, the first expedition ended in victory. The forces of the sultan and the uleebalang defended the centre of sovereignty, forced an enemy with modern weapons to withdraw, and killed its commander. The victory fostered the belief that the Dutch could be defeated and became an important part of Aceh’s memory of resistance. At the same time the failure pushed the Dutch to prepare a far larger second expedition at the end of 1873, which took the dalam in January 1874. The war opened by the first expedition lasted for decades.

The first expedition is also important for understanding Aceh’s political structure in 1873. The 1884 pamphlet depicts a sultan’s authority limited by the sagi chiefs, especially of the XXII and XXVI Mukim, who often acted on their own. It also shows the difficult position of local chiefs such as Teuku Nek of Meuraxa, who declared peaceful intentions to the Dutch but was forced to hand the beach fortifications to the other sagi, and whose villages were burned after he was suspected of collusion. From an Acehnese standpoint, the episode shows that despite differences among leaders, the defence of the kingdom’s centre could still be mustered effectively when the threat came from outside.

The pamphlet Beschrijving van Atjeh, printed in Batavia by H. M. van Dorp & Co. in 1873, shows the lessons the Dutch drew from this failure. It calls Aceh Besar the main theatre of the coming war, notes that the first expedition’s beach camp had stood on the dry strip near Meuraxa, and then maps rivers, estuaries, villages, roads, fords and coastal forts in detail, including the mosque’s position one hundred to one hundred and fifty paces from the north-west corner of the palace. Its appendix calculates rations and the number of coolies and forced labourers for one brigade. The document shows that the ignorance of the terrain that had proved so costly in April 1873 was being remedied before the second expedition set out.
