Metode studi Aceh: antara 'ilm ushul dan metodologi BaratMethod in Aceh studies: between 'ilm ushul and Western methodology
Aceh studies inherits two traditions of method: the 'ilm ushul alive in the dayah and the Western methodology developed in universities. The map of Islamic studies places both as scientific traditions that accumulate knowledge, then adds a third layer: methods fitted to the levels of reality in the Islamic worldview. Aceh studies combines all three: ushul for norms and texts, ethnography and history for the witnessed world, and 'irfani approaches for the inner realm. The combination is organised through the four-stage pattern of reasoning and the RDEDII sequence.
The history of scholarship in Aceh shows two lines of method that seldom meet. On one side the dayah hands down 'ilm ushul: how to read texts, weigh proofs, seek causes and consider public interest, learned through Shafi'i texts and practised in fatwas and the settling of disputes. On the other, since the colonial period Aceh has been an object of Western methodology, from Snouck Hurgronje's ethnography in De Atjehers to development surveys, conflict studies and post-tsunami reconstruction research.
The two lines have different strengths. 'Ilm ushul excels at reasoning about norms and keeping tradition continuous; Western methodology excels at observing social phenomena systematically and comparing them across societies. Yet each has blind spots. Ushul tends not to be used to read social change beyond ritual law, while Western methodology used without reflection cuts reality down to the observable and casts Acehnese society as a passive object.
The map of Islamic studies offers a way out through a third layer: methods according to subject matter within the Islamic worldview. Reality is divided into the absolute unseen known only to God, the relative unseen reached by the heart under revelation's guidance, and the witnessed world open to any method consistent with the Islamic worldview. This division gives each method its domain, so that no method monopolises reality.
Applied to Aceh, the division yields a concrete working map. Studies of family law, zakat or qanun require ushul al-fiqh; studies of landscape, disaster, economy and conflict require ethnography, history, statistics and mapping; studies of Sufism, inner knowledge and religious experience require phenomenology, Sufi hermeneutics and an 'irfani sensibility. The four-stage pattern of reasoning, from 'what happened' to 'what can serve as a basis of knowledge', stitches the three into one process.
The consequence is a demand for double competence among researchers of Aceh: command of Acehnese and the Jawi corpus, understanding of the logic of fiqh and Sufism, and training in social science methods. The demand also carries a critique of the colonisation of social science, the habit of applying outside frameworks without testing their assumptions in a society that puts religion at the centre of life.
