Dunia malam Banda Aceh: warkop, kafe, dan anak mudaBanda Aceh after dark: coffee shops, cafés and the young

Banda Aceh’s night life is not about clubs or bars but about coffee shops (warkop) and cafés open late, where young people gather to talk football, politics and everything else until near dawn. Gayo coffee and filtered coffee sustain it. The space has two faces: a distinctly Acehnese togetherness and networking, and the risk of wasted time and drift. The shift from traditional warkop to modern cafés has also changed who occupies public space and how preachers reach the young.

Banda Aceh kerap disebut kota seribu warkop.

Namun refleksi seorang pelajar Banda Aceh tentang dunia malam kotanya menunjukkan sisi lain.

Banda Aceh is often called the city of a thousand coffee shops. On every corner a warkop stays open late, and that is where the young gather. The coffee shop is a social stage: anyone can join in, argue a little, laugh and build networks. Coffee, whether Gayo, filtered or thick black, is the faithful companion that keeps eyes open and talk flowing. Because Aceh is a sharia region, nights in the city are relatively calm and devout; near mosques one can still hear Qur’an recitation or dhikr.

Yet a Banda Aceh high-school student’s reflection on his city’s night life shows another side. Many young people are caught in routine: long nights spent scrolling social media, smoking or simply ‘being seen’. Coffee has two faces, inspiration for some and an excuse for aimless all-nighters for others, leaving school and university the next day neglected. Some teenagers wander without purpose and try things far from Acehnese values. Night life is thus pictured as two sides of a coin: peaceful and convivial, but liable to become an empty space that consumes youth.

Religious observers have noted the same spatial change. Modern cafés have displaced traditional warkop, from the city to small subdistrict towns, and their occupants have changed too: once dominated by adult men and elders, cafés are now filled with young men and women, teenagers and even children, and women sitting in cafés have become an ordinary sight. Preaching strategies have adapted; young ulama and ustaz appear in cafés to lead study sessions and talk with youth. At the same time the warkop remains a place for public discussion that softens differences, so the remaining question is how to make Aceh’s nights not merely a place to hang out but a productive space.

The city’s night map also includes Peunayong, Banda Aceh’s oldest quarter and Chinatown, which comes alive after about eight in the evening. Tents selling Aceh noodles, filtered coffee and satay line the street, and at neighbouring tables local youths, tourists and shop owners of Chinese descent mix in Acehnese, Medan and Padang accents and foreign languages. Peunayong’s night shows that Banda Aceh’s nightlife is everyday life continuing after dusk, not club entertainment.

Generations Z and Alpha in Banda Aceh also have two coffee cultures. The warkop is chosen when they want a lively atmosphere and endless talk, the coffee shop for calm, schoolwork or simply something new. In the coffee shop people seek a balance between socialising and staying productive, unlike the warkop, where conversation runs without regard to time. The debate thus shifts from ‘warkop or coffee shop’ to how both can preserve the identity of Acehnese coffee.
