Seumike: cara berpikir orang AcehSeumike: the Acehnese way of thinking
Seumike (or pike) is the Acehnese term for thinking, rooted in the Arabic f-k-r; the phrase cara seumike refers to how knowledge is acquired and weighed. The study of seumike reads Acehnese philosophy through the words most often heard in daily life, such as bangai, carong, hayeu, ceumarot, teumeunak and reuboh. Its approach combines spiritual hermeneutics (ta’wil), phenomenology and lived experience within the community.
The most authentic product of Acehnese thought is usually identified as hadih maja, the elders' philosophical and metaphorical counsel. The study of seumike shifts from product to process: how Acehnese think and what shapes that thinking, seen through the relation between microcosm (‘alam al-shaghîr) and macrocosm (‘alam al-kabîr). Such thinking is regarded as strongly shaped by spiritual attainment and cosmological understanding, and as changing along with society.
Its material is everyday vocabulary: bangai (stupid), carong (clever), hayeu (impressive), ceumarot (to curse), teumeunak (to swear at), teumeutak (to behead), seumeupoh (to kill one another) and reuboh (to boil). The words are chosen not by quantitative count but from the experience of living in many parts of Aceh. Through them one can read the logic of social status, communal belonging and village solidarity.
The study arrives at three foundations of thought, namely nature, soul and religion, voiced as hana roh, hana get and han jeut and harmonised by timang. Seumike is thus not an abstract theory but a mode of reasoning that orders village life. It opens the way for further research on how Acehnese thinking negotiates with modern life.
