‘Alam al-kabîr dan ‘alam al-saghîr: makrokosmos dan mikrokosmos‘Alam al-kabir and ‘alam al-saghir: macrocosm and microcosm
Ayat-ayat kosmologi menegaskan keteraturan alam besar, sementara drama penciptaan Adam menyingkap kemuliaan alam kecil.
Sufi cosmology distinguishes the great world (‘alam al-kabir), centred on the divine Throne and ordered by God’s decree, from the small world (‘alam al-saghir) dwelling in the human heart. The great world divides into the world of command and the world of creation; the small world comprises spirit (ruh) and self (nafs). Cosmological verses affirm the order of the macrocosm, while the drama of Adam’s creation reveals the dignity of the microcosm. This framework underpins understandings of the Perfect Human and the Sufi path in Aceh.
The word ‘alam (world) is kin to ‘ilm (knowledge) and ‘amal (deed), so speaking of the cosmos is also speaking of knowledge and action. In the scheme presented, the great world is linked to God’s Throne (‘Arsh), from which descend the ‘alam al-amr (world of command) and the ‘alam al-khalq (world of creation). The world of command branches into reality (haqiqa) and its shadow, and from reality one studies God’s attributes and essence. Verses such as Fatir 43, al-Rum 30, al-Rahman 29 and Al ‘Imran 190–191 are read as cosmological verses pointing to the ‘sunna of God’, the ‘fitra of God’ and the ‘signs’ of cosmic order; the Qur’an states them tersely so that people may reflect and submit.
The small world is centred on the heart (qalb), pictured as an ocean without shore. From the qalb one speaks of ruh and nafs; the ruh branches into the spirit of prophecy and the spirit of sainthood, and from prophecy radiates the spiritual light of Muhammad and the other prophets. The spirit is sworn to obedience, while the self must strive to know its Lord fully.
The meeting point of the two worlds is the human being as vicegerent. Worship and gratitude are efforts to reach the cosmological axis and balance between them. Within this frame, discussing the Qur’an and the universe means discussing God, His creatures and humanity as khalifa. There is also a proposal to read the Qur’an as an ‘ethnography’ of cosmic life, an idea that challenges the habit of treating scripture solely as a legal code.
