Tangga nyawa makhluk dan asal-usul rasa malu dalam kosmologi ar-RaniryThe ladder of souls and the origin of shame in al-Raniri's cosmology
Disusun pada masa Iskandar Tsani (abad ke-17)Composed in the time of Iskandar Thani (seventeenth century)
In Nur al-Din al-Raniri's account of the beginning of creation, God, wishing to be known, made the Light of Muhammad from the light of His oneness, bearing two attributes, majesty (jalal) and beauty (jamal). When God regarded it with a gaze of love (mahabba), the Light of Muhammad was overcome with shame until it shed drops, and from those drops came the souls of prophets, saints, righteous believers, sinful believers, hypocrites and unbelievers. From the human soul were made the souls of angels, then jinn, devils, animals, plants and finally the four elements. This ordering gives humankind a high rank and makes shame part of the history of creation.
Tahap berikutnya menjelaskan asal segala nyawa.
Al-Raniri opens with God's state before creating anything, namely in the 'cloud' ('ama'), citing the hadith kana fi 'ama', understood as God's being within His knowledge. God was 'hidden and wished to be known', and created through the power of His knowledge. The Light of Muhammad was made from the light of His oneness; that light bears majesty and beauty (jalal and jamal), both among the Beautiful Names, so the Light of Muhammad can be understood as 'the praised light'. The universe was created for the sake of the Light of Muhammad, with reference to the hadith law laka lama khalaqtu al-aflak. Creation is read as a movement 'from being to being', with God's absolute and real existence as the foundation of divine unity (tawhid).
The next stage explains the origin of all souls. Regarded with love, the Light of Muhammad was overcome with shame until it shed drops; from those drops God made the souls of the prophets, the saints, the righteous believers and the sinful believers, and from the sinful the souls of hypocrites and unbelievers. Then from the human soul were made the souls of angels, from angels the souls of jinn, from jinn those of devils, from devils those of animals and from animals those of plants, each differing in rank, until the four elements came about: air, fire, water and earth.
Interpretation of this order stresses three points. First, the spirits of all creatures are interlinked, and humankind derives its nobility from this matter of souls, as expressed in the command for angels and jinn to bow before Adam. Second, without the Light of Muhammad no creature, including the unseen beings, would exist. Third, shame, said to be half of faith, turns out to be rooted in the event of creation. The account shows Acehnese scholars' attention to metaphysical cosmology, although among ordinary believers the first discussion of the divine usually begins with the Twenty Attributes (Sifuet Dua Ploh), while discussion of the divine Essence is mostly entered by Sufis.
