Kosmologi Islam: kisah kosmik al-Qur’an dan tiga wilayah penjelasannyaIslamic cosmology: the Qur'an's cosmic narratives and three fields of explanation

Cosmology is the science of the origin, structure, components, order and laws of the universe, standing at the crossroads of philosophy, theology and natural science. According to Samer Akkach, reward and punishment, the instruments of religious law, work only within a cosmological system that a society accepts. The Qur'an contains many cosmic elements, from the Throne to the stories of prophets that always unfold alongside natural phenomena, but it does not weave them into a single complete picture. Theoretical explanation developed in three fields: theology and polemics, philosophy and science, and hermeneutics and mysticism.

Kosmos means nature, and cosmology studies a community's view of, and relationship with, the micro- and macrocosm. Modern work, with the Big Bang, quantum gravity and general relativity, steers cosmology towards physics and astronomy, while McTaggart's study of Hegel's cosmology shows how closely cosmology is bound to philosophy. Akkach stresses that until the triumph of modern physics, cosmology belonged to theologians, mystics and philosophers and formed the core of the religious sciences: every religion explains creation, the cosmic landscape and what awaits in the hereafter, so cosmology underpins codes of morality and conduct. It follows that the laws and authority of belief are guided by the cosmology a society holds, and that cosmology's domain covers thought, inner life and patterns of action.

In Islam, cosmic reports recur constantly: the creation of humankind, angels, jinn, the heavens, the earth and the mountains, the end of time, time itself and animals. These phenomena provide strong grounds for faith. The prophets' stories always unfold with nature: Adam taught the names, Noah with the ark and the flood, Hud and Salih with the destruction of 'Ad and Thamud, Abraham with the fire that submitted, Job healed through nature by God's leave, Moses and Khidr reading the signs of nature, Solomon understanding all creatures yet remaining faithful, and Jesus born of Mary. There are also stories crossing dimensions of space and time, such as the Prophet's journey to paradise and hell, the difference between heavenly and earthly time, and the Night of Power.

Akkach notes that the Qur'an mentions the Throne, the Footstool, the Pen, the Tablet, paradise and hell abstractly, without weaving them into a complete cosmic picture. Scholars filled this gap through the three intellectual fields, as seen in Aceh in the expositions of Nur al-Din al-Raniri and the poetry of Hamzah Fansuri. Many Muslim scholars were experts in the revealed sciences and the natural sciences alike.
