Dunia Aceh dan Dunia Jawa: kosmologi keselarasanThe Acehnese and Javanese worlds: cosmologies of harmony

Both the Acehnese and the Javanese see life as an effort to keep harmony between humans and nature, between the outer and the inner. In Java this harmony is kept through a hierarchy of clergy, king and commoners and through protective supernatural figures such as Ratu Kidul. In Aceh it is framed by Islam and Sufism, so that no mythical patron figures are raised up even though supernatural practices persist. This difference explains the religious character of Aceh when set beside Java.

In this reading the Javanese world is understood as a single reality in which the visible and the invisible are interwoven. Classical Javanese society consisted of a clerical class, the court, and tax-paying villages. The king stood in the middle as the cosmic centre: the Yogyakarta palace is imagined on an axis between Mount Merapi to the north and the Southern Ocean to the south, and royal power was sustained by heirlooms, prophecy and a mythical bond with Ratu Kidul. Harmony was kept by the ethics of rukun and rasa; when its symbols were violated, amuk and a change of rule followed.

The Acehnese world has a parallel structure of a different kind. At the top stood the sultan, beneath him the uleebalang, then the mukim and sagoe. Islamic law was referred to the symbol of Syiah Kuala, governance to Po Teumeureuhom, ways of life to reusam bak bentara, and women's ceremonial affairs to qanun bak Putroe Phang. Harmony with nature is visible in houses oriented to the qibla, the well placed in front of the house, the latrine kept far away, unfenced houses within one kawom, and jurong lanes leading to the meunasah. The rice-field and sea feasts function like the Javanese slametan, but are always accompanied by prayer and tahlil.

The key difference lies in patron figures. The historical literature of the Acehnese kingdom presents no counterpart to Ratu Kidul or the Ratu Adil, particularly after the last sultan handed his mandate to the ulama. The Acehnese still know ghosts, possession, sorcery and ascetic retreat, but all of these are wrapped in Sufi life. The explanation offered is that Aceh was the first place where Islam took root in the archipelago and so became a kind of pilot project of Islamic practice that later spread to Java. Java, by contrast, is seen as having taken Islam as a tool for cultivating Javaneseness rather than replacing it.
