Acehnisasi dan Jawanisasi: menjadi Aceh, menjadi JawaAcehnisation and Javanisation: becoming Acehnese, becoming Javanese

Merantau ke Jawa sejak sekitar 1970-an hingga kiniMigration to Java from around the 1970s to the present

Anak-anak mereka tumbuh berbahasa Aceh. Sebaliknya, sebagian orang Aceh yang berhasil di Jawa justru melepaskan ke-Aceh-an mereka.

Decades of migration to Java produced intermarriages that changed villages on the Acehnese coast. Javanese women who married Acehnese migrants and settled in their husbands' villages underwent a process of becoming Acehnese, above all through communal preparation of wedding feasts. Their children grew up speaking Acehnese. Conversely, some Acehnese who prospered in Java shed their Acehneseness altogether.

Mekanisme pengacehan paling kuat bekerja melalui adat. Dalam rapat persiapan kenduri perkawinan terdengar seruan bek peumale gampong, ‘jangan mempermalukan kampung’, karena setiap kampung ingin tampil benar-benar Aceh. Para ibu muda dari Jawa harus mengikuti tata cara kampung, logat mereka dijadikan bahan canda agar cepat menyesuaikan diri, dan mereka segera terbiasa berbahasa Aceh. Ruang kerja bersama perempuan menjelang pesta menjadi sekolah sosial tempat ‘warga baru’ diterima.

In coastal villages of North Aceh such as Krueng Mane, almost every family has relatives who once lived in Java, and many married Javanese partners. Villagers call such relatives 'Betawi people'. Migration of this kind has two ways home. Successful migrants return at Lebaran in cars with Javanese number plates and become family success stories; those who 'failed' return with a wife and children, build beside their parents' house, and work in the paddy fields, at sea or as builders. These marriages produced a generation known elsewhere as Pujakesuma, but in the village they grow up speaking Acehnese.

The strongest mechanism of Acehnisation runs through adat. In meetings to prepare a wedding feast one hears the call bek peumale gampong, 'do not shame the village', because each village wants to appear authentically Acehnese. Young mothers from Java must follow village custom, their accents are teased so that they adapt quickly, and they soon speak Acehnese. The shared women's work before a feast becomes a social school in which 'new residents' are accepted.

The reverse process is noted too: Acehnese who live long and prosper in Java undergo continuous Javanisation, sometimes almost erasing their Acehneseness. Identity here is therefore not fixed but closely bound to economic life. The movement 'from the land of Aceh to the land of Java', once a matter of power and religion, has also become one of livelihood and contested identity, which makes the question of how one becomes Acehnese a research agenda in its own right.
