Utusan Syarif Mekkah ke Aceh (1681–1683) dan akhir masa para ratuThe Meccan Sharif's embassy to Aceh (1681–1683) and the end of the queens' era

In 1681 envoys of Sharif Barakat of Mecca reached Aceh after failing to obtain help from the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Sultanah Zakiatuddin Inayat Syah received them with honour and sent lavish gifts of gold for the Masjid al-Haram and the Prophet's Mosque. Two members of the embassy who remained in Aceh later became the root of an Arab dynasty, after Queen Kamalat Syah was deposed in 1699.

Around 1672 Sharif Barakat, ruler of Mecca, sent envoys east to seek donations for the upkeep of the Masjid al-Haram. The embassy was held up for some four years in Delhi without being able to meet the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb (1658–1707), who was unable to give his customary donation. On the advice of local notables they set out for Aceh and arrived in 1092 AH (1681).

The mission's journey reveals the economic map of piety in the Indian Ocean at the end of the seventeenth century. The sharifs of Mecca customarily depended on donations from Muslim rulers in the east to maintain the Masjid al-Haram, and the Mughal Empire under Aurangzeb was the most natural first destination. When the court of Delhi was unable to give, Aceh became the next choice, a sign that the reputation of Bandar Aceh Darussalam as a land rich in gold was still alive among Indian and Arab elites even though Aceh was now ruled by women. The warm reception in Aceh, compared with four years of fruitless waiting in Delhi, became an important part of how the episode was remembered.

In Aceh they were received with honour by Sri Ratu Zakiatuddin Inayat Syah (1678–1688). According to Acehnese sources cited by Jamil (1968), the learned sultanah spoke fluent Arabic and addressed her guests from behind a screen of dewangga silk. The embassy's arrival was also exploited by the opposition faction hostile to female rule.

The sources used by M. Adli Abdullah also state that the envoys' arrival stirred up a group he calls the wujudiyah, who rejected female rule. The label is intriguing because it links political opposition to the queens with the religious controversy that since the time of Nuruddin ar-Raniri had divided followers of wujudiyah teaching from their opponents. Yet the relationship between Sufi currents and attitudes to female leadership has not been adequately studied, and the use of the label wujudiyah in this context needs testing against sources closer to the events.

When the embassy departed, the sultanah gave presents for the envoys and the Sharif and donations for the Masjid al-Haram and the Prophet's Mosque: three qintar of pure gold, three ratl of camphor, sandalwood and civet (jeubeuet musang), three gold water pipes (gulyun), two gold standing lamps, five gold hanging lamps for the Masjid al-Haram, and a standing lamp and gold candlesticks for the Prophet's Mosque. The embassy left in 1094 AH and reached Mecca in Sha'ban 1094 AH (1683), by which time Sharif Barakat had died and been succeeded by his son, Sharif Sa'id ibn Barakat. Snouck Hurgronje, in Mecca two centuries later, wrote on "the sending of a Meccan envoy to Aceh in 1683" from Meccan historical records: the gifts were long kept in the house of Sharif Muhammad al-Harith, three-quarters were distributed to the entitled sharifs and the poor, and the remainder given to the two holy mosques. In M. Adli Abdullah's view, such generosity helped attach the epithet "Serambi Mekkah" (Veranda of Mecca) to Aceh among Meccans.

Two brothers from the embassy, Syarif Hasyim and Syarif Ibrahim, remained in Aceh at the request of notables opposed to female rule. They were honoured as teachers of religion, and one of them married Kamalat Syah, Zakiatuddin's younger sister. When Zakiatuddin died on Sunday 8 Dhu al-Hijja 1098 AH (3 October 1688), Kamalat Syah, styled Putroe Punti, took the throne on the advice of Shaykh Abdurrauf as-Singkili, who held the position of waliyul mulki.

The genealogy in the Mābaina al-Salāṭīn presents a court version that does not fully match the chronology above. The text records that under Sultanah Nurul Alam Naqiatuddin, who reigned two years, three months and twenty-five days, the core territory of Aceh was divided into three sagi composed of mukim. Her successor, Paduka Seri Sultan Inayat Syah, reigned eleven years and eight days, and then Paduka Seri Sultan Kamalat Syah reigned eleven years, four months and two days before being deposed by the ministers and the people because a letter came from Mecca declaring the rule of a female sovereign invalid. The text counts the reigns of the four queens as sixty-nine years, four months and seventeen days, and has Syarif Hasyim Jamalullail ascending the throne on Wednesday, 20 Rabiulakhir 1111 AH, not 1109 AH. These differences in years and in the length of female rule show that the chronology of the queens still requires critical reconciliation between the court genealogy, Meccan sources and European records.

After as-Singkili's death on the eve of Monday, 23 Shawwal 1106 AH (1695), the position of the queen was again challenged, this time by a fatwa of the qadi of Mecca which arrived through the "good offices" of the opposition. Kamalat Syah was deposed, and on Wednesday 20 Rabi' al-Akhir 1109 AH (1699) her husband, Syarif Hasyim, ascended the throne as Sultan Jamalul Alam Syarif Hasyim Jamalullail (1699–1702). This marked the beginning of an Arab dynasty that ruled Aceh until 1728. M. Adli Abdullah highlights the irony: the 59-year rule of the queens ended after Meccan intervention, not long after the queens had sent gold to Mecca.

The same genealogy also shows that the sharifian dynasty did not run smoothly. Syarif Hasyim Jamalullail reigned two years, four months and twelve days, was then deposed and left the Daruddunia for Tanjung on 17 Ramadan 1113 AH (15 February 1702), and died at the beginning of Syawal that year. His successor, Sultan Perkasa Alam Syarif Lamtui ibn Syarif Ibrahim, reigned two years and three months before being fought by Badrul Alam's son and removed in 1115 AH, after which the throne passed to Sultan Jamalul Alam Badrul Munir. The name Syarif Ibrahim here recalls Syarif Hasyim's brother who also settled in Aceh. This series of contests for the throne shows that descent from the Prophet did not by itself guarantee stability, and that the orang kaya remained the arbiters of who sat on the throne.

The events of 1681 should also be read within the long history of relations between Aceh and the Haramayn. Besides the queens' gifts of gold, Acehnese later left their mark in the form of endowments in Mecca, the best known being the waqf of Habib Bugak Asyi, pledged before the judge of the Sharia Court of Mecca on 18 Rabiulakhir 1224 AH to house pilgrims from Aceh. This pattern shows exchange in two directions: Aceh sent wealth and students to the Holy Land, while Mecca sent scholars, sharifs and fatwas to Aceh. The episode of Syarif Barakat's envoys shows that this exchange was not politically neutral; generosity could open the way to intervention, and religious authority from the centre of the Muslim world could be used by local factions to change the order of power.

For Aceh studies, open questions include the identity and content of the Meccan qadhi's fatwa brought to Aceh, how far it actually decided, or merely justified, a decision already taken by the orang kaya, and how the epithet Serambi Mekkah arose and spread, whether from the memory of Meccan society as recorded by Snouck Hurgronje or from Acehnese tradition itself. The episode also invites comparison with the relations of other Muslim sultanates in South and Southeast Asia with the sharifs of Mecca in the same period.
