Islamisasi Ilmu PengetahuanIslamisation of Knowledge

Wacana Asia Tenggara sejak 1970-an; IIIT 1981Southeast Asian discourse from the 1970s; IIIT 1981

The Islamisation of Knowledge is an intellectual movement seeking to reunite modern knowledge with the foundation of tawhid, abolishing the split between religious and secular sciences. Discussion of it emerged in Southeast Asia in the 1970s and was driven internationally by Isma‘il al-Faruqi through the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) from 1981. A series of international seminars in Islamabad, Kuala Lumpur and Sudan worked out its methodology. In Malaysia the idea was institutionalised through IIUM and ISTAC.

IIIT periodically designed the epistemology and steps of Islamisation and is said to have published more than 150 books towards it. The 1982 Islamabad seminar opened the discussion of methodology and was still sorting out which sciences could be Islamised. The 1984 Kuala Lumpur seminar moved towards concrete action by weighing Islamic thought's contribution to knowledge. The 1987 conference in Sudan set out Islamisation methodologies for several disciplines.

At its heart is the tawhidic approach: returning to the very foundation of knowledge, tawhid, by placing the Qur’an and Sunna at the centre of the other disciplines. In Malaysia, the International Islamic University (IIUM) was founded in 1983 and developed a family of 'revealed knowledge' disciplines, while Islamic thought and civilisation were concentrated at ISTAC under Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas. Mohammad Zaidi bin Ismail stresses that Islam's distinctive worldview yields a conception of knowledge different from that of other civilisations, including the modern West.

In Indonesia the idea reached IAIN somewhat late because of the dominance of rational Islam, and from the 2000s it surfaced as the integration of knowledge, shaped among others by Seyyed Hossein Nasr's view that knowledge, seen from an Islamic perspective, is ultimately one. Abdul Hamid Abu Sulayman added the diagnosis that the community's crisis stems from the stagnation of the methodology of Islamic thought. The idea's special link to Aceh lies in the claim that its intellectual foundations in Malaysia were drawn from the legacy of Hamzah Fansuri and Nuruddin ar-Raniri.
