Uraian Nuruddin ar-Raniry tentang awal penciptaan langit dan bumiNuruddin ar-Raniry's account of the creation of the heavens and the earth
Abad ke-1717th century
A section of Nuruddin ar-Raniry's writing, referred to under the title Khalq bad’ al-Samawat wa al-Ard, in Jawi Malay, that opens with an account of what God created first. It gathers hadith and sacred hadith on the Light of Muhammad as the first creation, followed by intellect, pen and spirit, before the seven heavens and the earth. Its cosmology parallels Hamzah Fansuri's. The status of some of the reports it cites is debated among hadith scholars.
The text opens with a chapter on ‘what God first brought into being’ and on the creation of the seven heavens and the earth. Ar-Raniry combines Arabic citations with Malay translation and commentary, a style typical of Jawi kitab. He begins with God's state before creation: God ‘was in His knowledge’. He then cites reports stating that God created the Prophet's spirit from His essence and the world from the spirit of Muhammad; that all things were created for Muhammad's sake; and that the first thing created was the intellect, the pen, the spirits, or the Prophet's light.
From these seemingly divergent reports ar-Raniry concludes that intellect, pen and spirit are in essence aspects of the Light of Muhammad. A modern reading formulates this as a ‘triangle’ of knowledge, the Light of Muhammad and the Spirit of Muhammad at the origin of creation, which then gives rise to the universal intellect, the Supreme Pen and the Preserved Tablet as determinants of the world's course.
The text matters for two reasons. First, it shows that ar-Raniry, known as a fierce critic of the wujudiyya, still shared the cosmology of the Light of Muhammad with Hamzah Fansuri. Second, it shows how concepts of knowledge and spirit were introduced to Malay readers through Jawi. Several of the hadith cited, especially those on the Light of Muhammad, are judged weak or baseless by some hadith scholars, so the text is better read as a document of Sufi cosmology than as a work of hadith scholarship.
The account also contains a hierarchy of souls: from the Spirit of Muhammad came the souls of prophets, saints, pious and sinful believers, hypocrites and unbelievers; then from human souls were made those of angels, then jinn, devils and animals. The Light of Muhammad's modesty when beheld by God's love marks the emergence of these souls, so that modesty is read as part of the story of creation. The Kasyf al-Ghaibiyyah adds the image of a four-branched tree called Syajarat al-Muttaqīn or Syajarat al-Yaqīn preceding the Light of Muhammad.
Among the reports gathered are the hadith ‘kāna Allāh wa lā shay’a ma‘ahu’ (God was and nothing was with Him), Abu Razin's question about God's state before creation, answered that He was in ‘amā’ (a cloud), the qudsi hadith related by Jabir on the Prophet's spirit created from God's Essence, and the report ‘law lāka’ (were it not for you). Four sets of reports on ‘what was created first’, namely intellect, the pen, the spirits and the Light or Spirit of Muhammad, are all referred back to the Light of Muhammad. The text was composed during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Thani.
